VASE THAT IS THIN AS A WHISPER

The packing-case was no or- dinary thing of lath and nails, but a box covered in lapestry, woven with gold thread, and fastened with an ivory handle. There were no paper shavings inside the case. but padded silk, tited to the exact shape of the rase.

"Look," he murmured, "It is as thin as a whisper."

It is just this atmosphere of ex. quisite fragility which la setting so many problems in the preparation of the exhibition. Chinese art, in Its own country is never shown in bulk, but always a few pieces at a time. To-day I was shown the design of the decor which will i preserve, as far as possible, the true spirit of the pieces them selves.

ENSHRINED

Case are being made, of white wood, locking rather little shrines, lined with the cream- beige-hand-made Chinese canvas that will cover the walls of the rooms, and foodllt, probably, from below. In each shrine will stand one star piece of porcelain or jade, with a few smaller pieces on white

All sorts of complications have urisen. One is colour. Chinese eyes do not sec colour in the same way as English eyes, and many an exhibit described in Chinese, for instance, as a shade of green. is undoubtedly. for the Englishman, a shade of blue.

A staff of 30 people, including the Chinese exports, are working hard at Burlington House now to prepare for the opening of the exhibition on November 28. The hinge .collection that came over from Shanghai in H.MS. Suffolk la all unpacked' now, and stowed away in special glass cases, for the actual setting out of the exhibits cannot begin until the end of the month.

During the past few weeks Hong Kong has been very much in the limelight regarding aviation and now we have received the news that further progress is hop a to be made to day when the Imperial Airways plane, Dorado, piloted by Capt. W. Armstrong, arrives from Penang about 12 hours after tak- ing off from the latter port.

The plane on another of the series of experimental fights be- ing undertaken in connection with the eventual linking up of Horg Kong with the Imperial Airways service.

The previous fights have been survey, but for the purposes of the present is the Arst under ser- vice conditions.

Only one stop is being made at Tourane where the plane will re- fuel and then immediately resume

its flight.
