Draped Evening Dresses

Sheathlike evening dresses are

now cut in one piece with their draperies.. In soine, which sre Inspired by sculpture. the drapery talls from a front fullness, and is drawn

the waist up to shoulders at the back. Ashimi- atting purple-blue romaine dress has a slightly draped crossover bodice: the drapery in front of the skrit is held by flat pleats; and is extended in a long, sweeping line to the back, where it is held on tht shoulder by large purple and white flowers. Other draperies seem to be of Oriental origin, as when skirits are heavily draped at the hems. Suitable materials for such gowns are heavy matt crêpes and romaines and soft. lustrous satins. The colours are pastels, especially cream and chalk whites.

"PARIS AUTUMN FASHIONS

Steel-Beaded And Velvet-Spotted

They nave plenty of character about them, the rich and luxur- ious fabrics which Parisian dress- makers have just finished mould- ing into the autumn fahlons that all the world's buyers have ar- rived in this city to inspect.

Woollens range from heavy to feather-weight. Such a number ure of the speckled or mostled variety that, although foundation colours are dark sportswear at any rate will present a colourful appearance. Dark brown and black materials are liberally be- spattered with knots and knobby tufts of white, deep red and yel- low thread, while other wopilens have vegetable hairs in light sha. des woven into them.

The keynote of chic "rör out- door wear this coming winter will Be simooth-surfaced, multi-col- oured fabrics, while every ma- terial in plain colour will be rough, spotted, ribbed, or broken with wavy lines.

RABBIT COLOUR

An angora novelty in real wilu rabbit colour is sewn all over with tiny steel beads, and the same beads are run in straight lines down black cloth.

Olre shows a woollen which is striped with little knobs or arti- ficial silk, and other woollens spotted with big velvet dots, of or woven with black cellophane, shming like jet trimmings against the duli ground. Rough spots of cellophane are also embroidered upon wool.

A reversible angora fabric is in two distinct, sharply contrasting colours-lhe rabbity shade, for in- stance, reversing to a bright green,.

some other colour equally

or vivid.

There is a version of the 'ever favoured bright and dull contrast, in which rough lines of shiny mohair ripple down a fine wool- len; or the same scheme with scattered knots of mohair sprink- led about a dull foundation.

CELLOPHANE TAFFETA

For the afternoon and informal evening are crepes, cloques in" ruther definite designs, and taf- Jetes which are very supple com- pared with those to which we are accustomed. Many taffetas are also woven with cellophane threads, one of Olre's having cellophane line, sewn down with Blame thread, all over it,

B

Some taffetas are brocaded for formal evening gowns. Indeed, we shall see many brocaded and lame gowns this winter. Here again these metal fabrics follow in the wake of the guks and will be remembered for their soft and supple folds.

gola lame in warm tones is always used in preference to pale gold or aliver, which an- pears but infrequently.

MAIZEES have a big stock of dresses, silk suits and woollens in the large size line and there are many very amart models among these.

MAYOS would like her many customers to know that their prices for hats are considerably

cheaper this season, although the quality is exactly the same as pre- vious years. Also, there are a good number of colour felts in such shades as green wine and fawn selling off at $5.50 only.

RIVELLE IS having a small clearance sale of this seasons dresses, suits, and evenings prices from $10.00 and some very nice "models in this lot.

WALKING STYLES

Basket weaves "are among the newest patterns for shoe leather. A blue "swirl" leather is also an attractive novelty. The popula- rity of the oxford has focused attention on lacings, which arc now frequently made of strips of the material, Another and ex- cellent innovation is the choice sometimes avaliable between n low and high heel in models other wise identical Elastic gor- ing makes a high ne practic- able in a shoe that yet stips on Like ย pump: Long vamps" balance the high side-lines of these ascendent shoes,

A novelty is a square heel and a square toe in an evening slip- per in satin and in a daytime pump inleather. Among the new shoe materials is reindeer, which looks like suède and, despite its asscelation with à valiant · and hardy animal, is used for even- ing models. Not so another suede like skin which turns out to be the reverse of brown calf. This is mounted for walking styles. Antelope is a favoured skin for afternoon pumps. When trimmed with kid they become formal. Light trims are much used on. dark

body leathers. Lizard skin heels are quite start- ling but are good form on leather models. T-straps are a very fay- orite design, and they are often fastened by a side buckle.

NEW VELVETS Perhaps the most prominent fabrics of the season, will be the velvets, both silk and artificial. They range from ribbed duve- teens for morning and sports coats to the finest and most sup- ple varieties, which have uttle in common with the velvets maast of us know. Quite a number have dull surfaces and a very short pile, but there is an Olre velvet of feathery beauty, with a long pile that brushes one way in nar- row lines, belween which one catches a glimpse of the lame musin foundation on which it is woven..

Uncrushable velvets will pro- bably score.on account of their being so practical One I saw, re- sembled a crepe, and was dotted all over with tiny holcs like the pricks of a pin-point.

Velvet has in any case a wide feld, and the numerous weaves will serve for all hours of the day, while milliners have chosen to make many of their models in a special heavy velvet, as well as satiny panne velvet for those models which will accompany the many" cocktail frocks and infor. mal evening gowns, some of which will consist of velvet jumpers, or Jame blouses, worn over velvet skirts.

YOU MUST HAVE A CAPE

Shoulder a cape these nights, says Vogue-long or short, tulle velvet or fur, relentless as an officer's cr as subtly draped as a Greek's On this point every dressmaker in Paris is in accord. Even the tulle cape may catch the new material spirit—there's less duffness this season, less frou-frou. But whichever type you choose a cape you must have!
