GREAT BRITAIN'S STRENGTH

In making a review of the strength of Great Britain, one must mention that from military point of view, this has undergone a vast change since the introduction of tariffs at Home. This change, we are happy to be able to state, has been for the better but the reasons for it are so obvious that they need no recapitulating here. The Liber- al Party, and especially Mr. Run- ciman agreed not so much to the system of tariffs in "than as a means of keeping British money in Great Britain.

Looking at

this

tom a military point of view it can have a very far reaching effect and already in certain directions, the results have been extremely im- portant. For a great many years one of the most serious problems with which the powers-that-be at Home were confronted was unemploy- ment but since tariffs were intro- duced this figure, which at one time reached the alarming total of over three millions, has been All that piece of land situate in reduced by more than one third. THE INTERPORT DINNER NEWS SUMMARY

Fitting Close To Gala Week

The very successiui "Interport Week" was brought to * fitting conclusion last night when the Interport dinner was held · in the Peninsula Hotel. As might have been expected the affair was voted "an unqualified success" by all who attended, and a spirit of convivality prevailed right through the evening.

The Chief Justice, Bir Atholl MacGregor, was in the chair and in the course of his speech said how sorry he was that ill- ness prevented him from attending any of the interport fune- tions.

A large and distinguished gathering attended, amongst those present in addition to Sir Atholl MacGregor being Commodore C. G. Sedgwick. 88. Leader Keary, Lieut-Col. H. B. L Dowbiggin, Messrs. J. Huxley and N. Hammond (Sha thai). F. W. T. Ross, W Lawrence, F. X. D'Alamada, Jnr., E. F. delk, D. F. Lopes, H. Hyndman and many others.

The "Records" Reviewed

Mr. F. W. T. Ross," the vice- chairman of the Victoria Recrea- tion Club, said:--

Your Honour, Mr. Huxley, Mem- bers of the Shanghai Team and Gentlemen,

behalf of on Chairman. Sir Thomas Southorn and members of the Hong Kong Interport Swimming Committee, I wish to welcome the Shanghal team and to thank the Shanghai Amateur Swimming Association for their kind acceptance of our In- vitation, We regret that owing to illness our Chairman Sir Thomas Southorn has been unable to wit- ness the swimming or be present. with us this evening, and I am sure you wil all join me in wish ing him a speed recovery.

This is the Brat time since 1921 that we have had the pleasure of a visit from Shanghai although we have been their guests on three occasions since then, namely: 1922, 1931 and 1934, and it gives us ab great satisfaction to feel that we have had the opportunity of re- newing their acquaintance in Hong Kong and we hope that it

will not be too long before we are again their hosts, ..

We regret very much that Mr. Taggart has been unable to be gart as you all know is the donor

the three Chinese representatives; for the part they played in helping Hong Kong to win the Taggart Trophy. Last but by no means least, he congratulated Noel Ham- mond, the Shanghai "crack" on breaking the 100 yards record.

The speaker made reference to the many records broken and con- cluded by thanking Dr. Douglas Liang for having looked after the Shanghai men who had developed illnesses during their stay here.

Britain had no desire to "do busi- ness" with other countries. As was mentioned earlier in this article the idea was to keep British money inside Britain as far as possible, and m this connection it might be said emphatically that the results have been entirely satisfactory in that it has greatly enhanced Britain's military power.
