SMALL POWERS RALLY
TO THE LEAGUE
Eloquent Declaration By
Mr. De Valera
Geneva, September 16.
The smaker nations continue to rally to the support of the League covenant. To-day it was Mr. de Valera's turn and he eloquently proclaimed the Irish Free State adherence to the obligations in a bitter survey of international feeling which contrasted with the deep sadness now obtaining in a League with lofty purposes the previous year.
Mr. de Valera asserted that "lo-day the cynic is our teach- er and whisper to us that man is only a beast, and victory reste with the brutal." He asked: "What could be more melancho- He than to be thrown into enmity with those whose friend- ship we desire and oppose those, we admire? That was a hard price we have to pay for collective security, but it is worth it.
"If our aggressor is to be given a free hand and others.. restrained, it is better to return to the old system of alliances. Our own conduct now will be determined whether the League is worthwhile surviving or whether it should be allowed to lapse." -Reuter,
