A UNIFORM STROKE When Mr. Taylor was four miles off Dover, at 10.30, he could make very little headway. But he held his own and maintained a uniform 24 strokes to the minute almost from the beginning to the end. At one time he found his goggles leaked. and they had to be changed for another pair.

TWICE LAST YEAR
The Channel has been swum 20 times in all. The record time was made by Georges Michel, & Parts baker, who crossed from Cape Grimmez to St Margaret's Bay, Dover, in 1926. at his tenth at- tempt, in 11 hours 5 minutes.
The Channel was swum twice, last year. Frad Emma Faber, an Austrian. swam from France to England in 14hr. 40 min., and E. H: Temme, the London insurance clerk, swarn the same day from England to France in 15hr, 54min. He had swum the Channel fn, the reverse direction in 1927, and 1 the only person who has swurn it
both ways.
SEISMIC DISTURBANCES
Foochow, Sept. 16. Foochow communications were totally interrupted as a result of Occurrence of seismic waves.
The seismic waves also caused raging currents to overflow the farmlands along the Min River. Crops in "Walan and Yuanping- helen, districts near Min River, were totally 'inundated.
