A.D.C.s To The King

(Special Afr Mall Service)

London, August 5. More than half the Naval aides- de-camp to the King have been changed as a consequence of re- cent promotions to the flag list. It has been the custom since the War to appoint captains at the top of the list by seniority. Apart from the Rear-Admiral Commanding H.M. Yachts, who acts while hold- ing this appointment, there are eight Naval AD.Cs, to his Majesty, nf whom two are engineer cap- tains. R.N., and six are captains, R.N. It has sometimes happened that a run of promotion will re- move all six captains from the top of the list, and as the distinction of ADC. is relinquished or pro- motion this involves the appoint- ment of a completely new list, so far as executive officers are con- cerned.

The custom of naval aides-de- camp was established on a regular basis by William IV. over a century ago, and in his day the admiral serv'ng 15 First and Principal

day. The former allowance is still pald; the latter is not; it was abolished by Order in Council of July 16, 1914.

There is no special signiucance about the selection of a captain to serve as AD.C. now that it has become more or less an automatic d'stinction. It is not conferred as a reward for special service, ex- cept in so far as any officer must have put in many years' meritori- ous service before he could reach the position on the captains I'st. from which A.D C.s are appointed.
