CHINA'S GREAT SAGE
Nation Pays Homage
Shanghai, Aug. 28-Official ob- servance of the. birtnday anniver- sary of Confucius, the greatest Chinese Sage, was held throughout the country yesterday. All Govern- ment offices were closed and meet- ings were had to commemorate the occasion. The occasion was observed, for the second time in history of the Chinese Republie, as a. national holiday. The decision of the National Government, to make this a national holiday fol lowed the launching by General Chiang Kai-shek of the New Life: Movement which has for its mot to the four words, 11, yi, lien, and chih meaning politeness, righteous- ness, purity of conduct and self- consciousness, as advocated by the "Great Scholar" of China.

General Han Fu-chu, Chairman of Shan- tung Provincial Government, at- tended, as the representative of the National Government. The ceremonies began at 7am. in the Confucius Temple at Chufu when General Han made the offerings before the altar. Following this, General Han and other partici- pants visited the tomb of Confu- clus and made offerings in ac- cordance

'IN NANKING
In Nanking. two separate meet- ings were held, one in the main hall of the Confucius Temple at y a.m., when more than 500 repre sentatives from Government, Kuo Min Tang and public bodles. were present. Mr. Ma Chao-tsun, Ma- yor of Nanking, who presided over the ceremony, was the chief. speaker, the other meeting. was held in the auditorium of the Cen- trál Kuo Min Tang Headquarters. Approximately 500 prominent peo- ple, including high government officials and executive members of at- the Kuo Min Tang, were in tendance.
The celebration in Shanghai was marked by an impressive cere mony held at the main hall of the Confucius Temple near West Glate in Nantao at 10 am., with approxi- mately 1,000 representatives from local government. Kuo Min Tang offices and schools in attendance. Mr. Pan Kung-chan, Commission-
