Eleven Orders For The North-East Coast

While it is nearly two months since an order of any importance was obtained on the Clyde, firms on the North-East Coast of England received orders for no fewer than 11 ships during the past week.

It is indeed necessary to go back many years before recalling days when so many shipbuilding orders were placed in so short a time with North-East Coast Arms,

#D

This remarkable and exceedingly welcome achievement was brought about last week when the Furness Shipbuilding Company, Ltd., Hs verton Hill-on-Tees, secured order valued at £400,000 from the Soriet Government for seven tim ber-carrying ships; Mesars. William Doxford and Sons, Ltd., Sunder land, orders for three motor cargo ships for Messrs. Stephens, Sutton, Ltd:: Newcastle-on-Tyne;

Messrs. Swan Hunter and Wigham Richardson, Wallsend-on-Tyne,

A

repeat order from Messrs. Bullard, King & Co., London, for a passen- ger and cargo vessel 400 ft, in length

As regards the new work received by Messra Doxford, it is stated that there is a probability of an- other order being placed with them by the same owners

BUSY TEES YARD

The Furness Shipbuilding Com- pany, Lt, have now 10 orders on haud, and are busier to-day than for 14 years. la 191 it was common to see as many as 12 ships on the stocks. The slump, however, rapid- iy brought that number down to Iwas and threes, and even one.

Each of the seven ships orders by Russia will be 320ft. long, with s of about 4,000. metric tonnage
