It may be recalled that for many years natural lacquer and work- oil have been extensively used in China for surfacing purposes. The former is produced abundant- ly the provinces of Anhwel Chekiang, Hunan, Hupeh, Klangsi, Fukien. Szechuan, Kwangtung, Kwangsi, Kwelchow, Bouthern Shensi and southern Honan, and lacquerware from Fukien and Pet- plog is well known on foreign markets. Wood-oll is largely pro- duced in. Szechuan, Hunan, "Hu- peh, and other provinces along the Yangtze and Pearl River Valley and has become "one of the most important lines of Chinese ex- ports. In spite of the continued economic depression and the re- cent American success in the cul- tivation of tung-trees, the export of wood-at! for 1934 still amounts to $26,215,688. Of these shipments more than 60 per cent, went to the United States. but owing to the steady increase in the area of tung-tree plantation, exports to that country tend to decline.
FOREIGN PAINT The import of foreign paint intc China is of comparatively recent origin, and owing to its increasing use Chinese paint factories were started in Shanghai, Hankow and Tientsin. In the latter city there are five such factories, whose cutput is steadily gaining popu larity, and already dominates the local market. Of the dive factories the China Faint and Pigment Company is the largest, being capitalized at $500,000. It employs more than 60 workers and several technical experts, and had several well-equipped departments, such as all-refining pigment, tin-mak ing. labeling, and packing. The machinery used is being driven by Gregory 100 horse-power motors.
