NOTES

Lace For Summer Wear

Lace is a material which is very popular for late summer fashions. It is used to give the covered shoulder effect on day and

evening gowns in the form of massed ruffles, a deep collar, or a berthe on an off-the-should décolletage. There are starched cotton and linen laces, in pastel shades, as well as the better known silk faces, and fine net with a design in cello phane thread. Capes and coats accompanying plain or printed, evening dresses are made in starched net or lace in the "colour of the background of the design Natural and grey are two new colours which are somewhat un- usual in evening gowns. Natural coloured heavy lace looks well over a slip of pink satin A dress of Ane grey lace is finished with a red draw string at the neck and matched by red slip- pers, To an evening, gown of pale pink lace a sash of deep wine velvet gives an effective touch of colour. For the formal reception gown white and pastel coloured laces are woven with a fine silver or gold thread. With the grey or natural shades of lace a steel or copper coloured, metal thread is most effectivé, Many little removable capes ac- company evening gowns. A fichu, capelet, or the briefest of little jackets ⠀ with large full sleeves" are in thin materials such as tulle or net. A dark blue satin. evening dress is worn with a full length circular cape with a hood,... The material used for the cape is

GREAT VARIETY

Day-time necklines show great variety this season, with a definite tendency to a lower line either cut in a V. or in a square, Much finely pleated white lace"is used for jabots, frills, and collars. A tiny roll collar is finished with a jabot of fine lace; tied with pink gros grain ribbon and worn with a black crêpe dress. A star- ched ruche of pleated lace stands high at the back and is clipped down in the front of a V-shaped neckline.

Lace trimming is also used to give the wide shoulder effect on Night- lingerie and negligées. dresses have wide shoulder straps of Alencon face, or a neckline gathered with a draw lace edged Zrill. string into a A jabot of fine lace is rised on the front of a princess shaped, nightgown and is dyed to match the satin with which it is used.

Coarse lace in pastel shades lined with matching, chifica is used for tailored dressing "gowns which are particularly useful for travelling purposes. Ostrich feather trimming has also re- turned to favour. There are ostrich trimmed hats of all lines, from the close-fitting toque which is almost completely cover,, ed to the wide capeline trimmed with a fat ostrich feather found the crown or long plumes from to back of hat. Borders of cs- trich feather are used to give shoulder width or to follow the lines of the cascading frills on a chiffon evening dress Capes are made entirely or estrich feathers

THE CHANGING DRESS CODE

What To Wear At Cowes

We now leave frills and furbe- lows and the picturesque dresses of summer and look with some eagerness towards the future. Great changes have come over the choice of clothes "for Goodwood and

at Cowes, unless it is exceptionally hot or for functions on shore, are mostly of the serge and flannel' order for orie has to prepare for sea breezes. White hopsack tweed" is now added to the sea- faring at, and a new flaxlinen" mixed with wool,

Knitted wool and slik are popu- lar and useful, either for Good- -wood or Cowes. The range in knitted suits, cardigans, jumpers.

Cowes. These were ünce highly specialised, but now, apart from the yachts-woman, nothing. of a special nature is chosen for either event. The modern "laws of smart simplicity and of the Importarice of accessories are ob-waistcoats, pu'lovers, scarves and served for this as for other "oc casions.

In the old days, Goodwood was a country summer meeting, with cotton frocks and straw hats for the young, and a simple style of semi garden party frock the elders.

Cowes, more than any regatta, was once a strictly nautical meet ing. Yachting garb for Cowes Week was specialised, colours be ing restricted mostly, to navy blue afloat, and white naval serge when ashore. The trimwmeat of tallored suits and neat headgear was always, and still is, the cor-.. rect choice.

Members of the Royal Yacht

VIOLETS FOR SUMMER Squadron and their womenfolk

Carole Lombard, has included a beautiful Summer hat in her new wardrobe.

It is a large hat in a soft grey shade and has a suggestion of a tilt to the brim. A contrasting note is struck by a cluster of violets placed at the front of the shallow crown.

A deeper violet-coloured ribbon In velvet ties round the crown, and makes the hat one of the most fascinating of the Summer season.

are still faithful to the traditions of the sea, and adopt their special make of serges and buttons. Far more licence is permitted, how- ever, largely owing ta: the fabrics-thin as well as thick —by our clever manufacturers and tailors. For Cowes there is, too, the exclusive top-coat of navy, lined with white cloth. Aimilar type of sports. coat “is now kept handy for most outdoor functions.

As a guide to overseas and for- eign visitors who are not famil'ar with our sports traditions, simple clothes are best for the Goodwood paddock, the Castle lawn and when yachting.

Goodwood weather can" be very, warm despite the shade of beaut- ful trees. Chiffons and muslims being too dressy," the correct cho'ce is ghantung, washing s'lks, or the popular grey-and- white flannels. Cotton fabrics, sponge-cloth, linen, summer tweeds and tailored tatreta and organdje can be very smart, ir kept strictly on plain Hines, för Goodwood is now a smartly ta lor- ed tameta and organdle can be very smart, if kept strictly on plain Ines, for Goodwood It now a smartly tailored meeting. Fabrics

handbags increases in charm and variety each season. The knitted frock is designed for all and any occasions. Many knitted navy and white sults have a matching top coat of a much thicker stitch and heavier weight. These big wrap coats will be seen on the launches at various regattas

Should sunshine prevail, some plain coarse straw and linen shady hats will be seen at Goodwood, but felt will be more general. This summer felt, yarled by the knitted beret, is attractive by the sea. The torpedo toque and Breton off-the- face sailor in felt and fabric will" appear at both places, but the narrowed toque, with brim of fancy straw and crown of black velvet, is not for Cowes. A similar shape, with a wool woven crown and a closer navy felt brim that' can be placed at as'de angle and not catch the breeze, is, however," correct at the sea. Then there is. the latest halo ideal for any race- meeting. Many halo-bonnets, will appear at Goodwood.

Felt and velvet, in the new coral-pink and tomato shades, are likely to be very popular, "espe- cially with the lighter ta'lored suits. These shapes have a sort of bonnet cap in velvet, Atting the head, with the wide halo made of matching felt,

At Cowes they, would be quite impossible and should not be at-

tempted. I think that for any outdoor function the halo of the moment must be considerably mo- dified.

Smart dressing in the evening is usual during the house parties for the Bussex or Cowes Week. The must lovely clothes and jewels are worn-l fact, the grande toilette, with all the latest, accessories.”“”
