Sir Archibald Montgomery-Mas- singberd stood third on the list of Generals, those senior to him being Sir Charles Harington and air. Da- vid Campbell, He succeeded Lord Milne as Chief of the Imperial Ge- neral Staff on Feb. 19, 1939, after a very successful period as G.0.0. in Chief, Southern Command.
He went out to France as a jun- lor staff officer, and after very ra- pid promotion became Chier of Btán to Gen: Sir Henry Rawlinson, who commanded the 4th Army.
The new Field-Marshal was with his Chief throughout the long-. drawn battle of the Somme and the subsequent fighting in front of Amiens in 1917.

They returned later to re-create the old 4th Army, which was to play a decisive part in the victorious offensive in the summer and autumn of 1918.
