"Aerial survey is one of the very latest aids to the collection of ac- curate knowledge of the earth's surface. It must not be thought photographs from an aeroplane and maps are interchangeable terms. There are two distinct branches in the subject of aerial photography; that is to say, photographs may be taken with the camera either point- નોં vertically downwards or cbliquely. Naturally photographs. taken vertically approach nearest to the ordinary map as we know it, but it cannot be said that a vertical photograph alone gives an accurate representation of particular area of land.

The echnique of plotting these vertical photographs and rendering them ful as maps is, I understand, very well aeveloped, but very lengthy. From the explorer's point

view oblique photographs art. For more valuable. Oblique photo- graphs sometimes show entirely new .catures, for example, the Juthern face of Mount Everest, or the splendid waterfalls along" the Kaieteur escarpment in British Guiana. These falls are situated in vast and unmapped forests; there are no surveyed ground marks, and not even the plan, still less the height of the falls them selves, can be determined with any accuracy.
