That the year 1934 was a high- ly important one in the annels of the Royal Empire Society WAS made abundantly clear in the Council's report presented at the annual meeting. Some idea of "the work involved tr transferring the contents of the library alone may be gathered from the fact that it now contains 244.673 books and ramphlets. The transfer to new premises involved literally months of work, as it was necessary that each should be al- lotted its proper place in the new. building before being tied up for removal In all some 20,000 bunɩ- dles of books were prepared and these were removed in 27 larg pantechnicons.
The Travelling Commissioner's tour through the Sudan, East Africa, the Rhodesias and the Union of South Africa resulted in an addition of over 500 new mem- bers to the list, while both the Chairman, Sir Archibald Weigall and Lord Sempill, deputy-chair- man, paid visits to Australia dur- ing the year and made useful con- tacts with branches and represen- tatives of the Society.
On May 1st Mr. R.E.H. Bally C.B.E. took up his duties as the newly appointed Secretary of the Society, Mr. Baily was for 23 years in the Sudan Political Service and was Governor of Kassala Pro- vince 1926-32.
The Society's Gold Medal has been awarded-by the Council this year to Sir. William Grenfell, in recognition of his services to the Empire and of the excellance of his book "The Romance of La- brador."

Three new pits which are being dpened by the Lu Ta Coal Mining Company in Tzechwan, North- Eastern Shantung, are expectea, ca be producing coal early next month. Acording to the manage- ment, an output of 2,300 tons daily may be counted upon by Septem ber.
