it is pointed out in the Customs report that, lest the leading post- tion occupied by cotton and cot- ton piece-goods give rise to misconceptions as to the great importance of imports of cotton piece-goods, it is necessary to note that this group includes than $90,000,000 worth of raw cot- ton. leaving only $35.800.000 to cover all importation of cotton FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST. plece-goods and the like during 1934. Further, one must not over- look the fact that the Chinese tex- tiles industry has already expert- enced a very serious depression, in recent years. Since the close of the Great War many Chinese cot- ton mills have been established. In 1918 there were 570,000 spindles • In Chinese mills. but the number was increased to 2,100,000 spindles in 1924. During the same period the spindles of Japanese mills in China Increased from 170,000 to 1.200,000, a much greater growth than that registered by Chinese mills. During the 10-year period from 1924 to 1934 the number of spindles in Chinese mills increas- ed from 2,100,000 to 2,880,000, while the increase made by Japanese cotton mills was from 1,200,000 to 2,090.000. Since then Chinese mill; have been steadily josing ground to their competitors with the re- sult that cotton-piece-goods top- ved the list of product into this country during the past years..
DECLINE IN IMPORTS
The heavy decline in the imper- tation of cereals and tour was due principally, to smaller importations of staple commodities such HS rice, wheat and wheat flour.
In reviewing trade as itemized in the report, special emphasis is placed on cotton. The report points 'qut that the trade in tex, tiles in China has probably suffer. ed more than any other section of international commerce from the striving after Eational self- sumclency that has been witness- ed during recent years; all over the world. and China has not beer backward in endeavouring to, en- courage, her native industries at the expense of imports from other Countries.
The revised tariff introduced during the year under review, hów- ever, left the rates untouched, and, with a few exceptions, the duties an all varieties of printea and miscellaneous plece-goods was actually icwered instead of raised. It is hoped that through the com- bined effect of sufficiently high duty rates and an increase in do- mestic output, cotton gonds vl have fallen in the course of a few years from the top of the list of China's imports to a posimon of re lative unimportance
