Since the Treaty, the Anglo- THE HUNT "CUP`
Russian trade situation has moved
In our favour in certain respects. A marked reduction had under- gone in our adverse balance, for instance. Last year Russia kept strictly within the agreed British Import-export of 100 to 170, while in the Arst quarter of this year there was an actual balance on cur side. Due to a reduction In the imports 'which fell from
£3,500,000 in the first quarter of last year to £2,200,000 in the same period of this year this result had been made possible. It was also partly due to a very substantial increase in Russian purchases of British re-exports, which are now nearly three times as great as they were a year ago; partly by the in- creased chartering of British ships, of which up to date details are not available. There is no reason to doubt but that it is greater than it was before the Treaty. In figures these ad vantages are certainly better than nothing, at least a complete stagnation in the export of British manufactured goods to Russia are offset in this way. The aggregate contribution of the Treaty towards the solution of our unemployment problem is so far negligible.
