No Clothes To Fit

Him

Mr. Charles Laughton is in difficulty. Since he took the ad- vice of a Hollywood diet specialist he has lost so much weight that none of his suits fit him,

For years Mr. Laughton turned the scale at about 16st. At last the responsibility became too weighty for him and while in. Hollywood he consulted a woman specialist whose recommended dlet worked like a charm. The responsibility is now only 121st. and still getting lighter.

Mr. Laughton is greatly pleased with himself. But his wife (Elsa Lanchester to fim and theatre- goers), although she shares his pleasure, is worried about his clothes, This is what she said:

"None" of his clothes fit fim now. He had one or two sults "made only six or seven weeks ago. and already they are too big.. It is just like a child growing up.. "only "the other other way round.

"This slimming business has made a change in his appearance; too, especially from the back. Sometimes when I come. up to him from behind I do not recognize him for a few momenta. He often looks very like his brother, who is much slimmer than Mr. Laughton used to be.

Stül, he is certainly much At-" ting than he was, and feels far more comfortable than he did. He is under a trainer, with whom he boxes and wrestles and his favourite pastime is chopping down trees--all very good for the waist-Line.*

The most interesting news from Hollywood is that Marlene Diet- rich, the famous Paramount star,. is to play the violin again,

It is well-known that, but for a severe wrist injury years ago, the star THE DEVIL 19 Á WOMAN, might have become a great concert violinist.

For ten years she has been un- dergoing almost daily treatment and her wrist is quite flexible again. The famous star has al- ready started practice under a celebrated teacher. "

THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN--- Miss Dietrich's, latest Paramount picture--is a triumph for the star. It is a Alm of glitter and. romance with Marlene moving gracefully and acting bril- liantly through scenes of the warm Bouth.

Her supporting cast includes Lionel Atwill, Cesar Romero, All- *son Skipworth and Edward Ever-

GARBO RECAPTURED POPULAR VOTE

Greta Garbo has recovered her leading place in the affections of British Alm-goers, according to the present indications of a poll conducted among 200,000 people by the "Picture-goer."

STARS AT HOME STUDIO GOSSIP

Robert Donat

have had Few young actors such a meteoric rise to fame as ROBERT DONAT who attracted notice in "The Private Life of Henry VIII made a tremendous success of the name part in "The Count of Monte Cristo" and who has just starred with Madeleine Carroll in the Gaumont British Spy thriller; "The Thirty-Nine Steps"

It has been able to ascertain that the early voting places her first. Norma second, and Nova Pilbeam the 14 year-old. London actress of "Little Friend, third,

Born at Withington near Man- chester on March 18th, 1905, Do- nat studied for the stage and for years gained an invaluable act- ing experience in the repertory theatres of the country. From the famous Liverpool Repertory Theatre he eventually, came to London and appeared in "Knave and Queen" at the Ambassador's. A year at the Embassy Theatre followed and then he came well to the fore with his brilliant port- rayal of "Gideon Sarn" in the dramatic version of Mary Webb's novel "Precious Rane" in 1931,

With the success of "The Count of Monte Cristo" this young mản who had once joined Frank Ben- son's company with two shillings in his pocket found himself well on a level with the great stars of the age and Mar Reinhardt has best placed him among the 10 actors alive. In the engaging "personality of Robert Donat there smoulders acting strength of great power. “Genius”

much maligned word, but Donat is fully 'entitled to have claim to it in all Its aspects. This tall, brown- haired man of thirty has a sense of command; his voice is rich, sincere, and resonant, he under- stands the art of reserve in acting and has power of character at his finger tips.
