New Rear-Admiral

London, May 16." Rear-Admiral E. H Ramsay, MVO., who has been promoted to flag rank from May 9, has hitherto been a command of the Royal Sovereign. This battleship has re- turned from the Mediterranean for long rent, which should be com- pleted in time for her to be present at the Naval Review,

Rear-Admiral Ramsay is 52 and has had 37 years' service." He was a sub-lieutenant of the Hyacinth during the Somaliland War and was landed for the capture of Illig As a lleuterint he specialized in signals, and he was one of the first officers to be appointed to the War Staff in 1913. In the War he was Flag Lieutenant-Commander to Vice-Admiral Sir Douglas Gamble; he commanded a monitor, M 25, on the Belgian coast; and was also in command of the flotilla-leader Broke in the Dover Patrol. When Lord Jellicoe made his tour of the Dominions in 1919 in H.M.S, New Zealand, Rear-Admiral Ramsay was Als Flag Commander. His cap- tains commands since 1923 have included the cruisers Weymouth. Danae, and Kent, in the last named of which he was Flag Captain and Chief of Staff in China. He has also served on the staffs of the War and the Imperial Defence, Colleges. CRUISER FOR CHINA STATION

H.M.S. Dorsetshire, Captain A. J. L. Murray, DSO, OBE.. is to leave Devonport to-day for the China Station. She has previously served in the Home Fleet and as flagship on the Africa Station, but is now going to China to replace the Cum- berland, which has been withdrawn for large repairs. The programme of her voyage out is as follows:- Gibraltar, May 17-18; Malta, May 21-24: Pert Säld, May 27; Ismaila.

The new sloop Wellington. Com- mander J. B. E. Hall, arrives in New Zealand waters to-day. and, ap- propriately, her frst port of call is From Hong Kong to be Wellington. She will stay there until Friday, before going on to the base at Auckland. The Wellington replaces the War-bullt sloop Laburnum, which has beconte drill-ship of the Singapore Division of the R.N.V.R. She will make her first cruise from July 15 to Septem- ber 21 among the Pacific Islands

COMMANDER L, C. LAWRANCE

Lieut.-Commander L. C. Law- rance, who has been placed on the retired list with the rank of com- mander, is one of 48 officers who were commissioned as mates in December, 1917, of whom only five now remain on the active list, one of whom has reached the rank of commander (active). Commander Lawrance served in the battleship Malaya during the War, and after- Lt. (Emergency List)-W. H. wards in the fishery gunboat Hills, name replaced on Emergency Ettrick, and the sloops Truro and List (with original seny, of Aug.1,

commanded the 1929), fishery gunboat Kenriet in 1930-32, and in 1932-34 served in the sub-service marine depotship Medway in China. (April 10).
