GAMBLING HOUSE RAID A

Before Mr. Macfadyen at the Central Magistracy yesterday four Chinese. Kwong Fook, Mak Sang, Mak. Kwok and Map Hung ware charged with keeping No Wing Lee Street 2nd floor aq a comman gambling house.

Defendants were represented by Mr. C. E. L. Grist of Mesars, Wil- kinson and Grist. Sergt. Goodwin was prosecuting.-

Mr. Grist entered a plea of guilty for the first défendant and not gallity for the second, third and fourth defendants.

Choy Yee, a Chinese detective in evidence said that by virtue of a warrant on May 20. at 10.15 pm. he went to No. 8, Wing Lee Street And noor and climbed "over from the verandah to No. 7. He saw a long table in the parlour of the house and Arst defendant was seen standing at the head of the table with the back towards the veran- dah. He was playing "Fan Tan." Second and third defendants were sitting next to first defendant and were alleged to have collected the money and sorted them out in the money board. They were arrested together with 33 men who were standing round the table.

The fourth defendant who was para 50 cents by first defendant to watch the door was arrested on the stairs when he was trying to get away.

The second defendant stated that he worked on the s.s. Yuet On us a ten hawker and he went to the address after the boat had arrived in Hong Kong on the same day. He was discharged as there was insuficient evidence against him.

The first defendant was "fined $75, and in default 6 weeks' 'hard labour. The third and fourth de- fendants were fined $30 each and in default 3 weeks hard"labou.

The sum of $12.77 and $3.40 in Canton currency which were found on the table were confiscated.

RETURNED BANISHEES

At Central Magistracy yesterday before Mr. Macfadyen, several man were charged with breach of the deportation ordinance.

Chan LIK Cheung, aged 29, un- employed, was sentenced to 12 months hard labour. He was banished for 10 years from August, 1929. For similar offences, Chung Wing, aged 24, unemployed, who was banished for five years' from October, 1934, was sentenced to six months, and Wu Leung. aged 21. unemployed, who was banished for 10 years in July, 1934, was sent to prison for ten months.

Two Chinese were charged be- fore Mr. Wynne-Jones at Kowloon Magistracy yesterday with being in possession of counterfeit coins.

The first defendant, Wong Yan, 25 a conductor of Kowloon Motor Bus Co., was alleged to have in. his possession 4; Hong Kong five cent pieces, all counterfeit, while the second defendant, So Cheung, un- employed was charged with having 960 false colus of similar des nomination.

Wong Yan pleaded he received the bad money in the course of his work and it was his intention to throw it away.

Bo Cheung pleaded not gullay to the charge.

Det.-Bergt. Franklin stated the defendant, Wong Yan, was arrest- ed on bus. 331 on Tuesday on in- formation. The counterfeit money was found in the middle of three compartments of his bag. In the other two compartments good, money was found. The bus was boarded in Jordan Road.
