CARS OF TO-DAY GREAT SCOTTISH

Lagonda Rapier

The Lagonda Rapier is made for the young, the sum, and the not too tall. There is auçn that is attractive about – IE, £œough has some drawbacks; but it is a thoroughly. Britisa product. in" its high efficiency,

The saloon is neat but rather small; the beam and the front bucket seats could be wider with advantage. The rear seat is also somewhat cramped, and head- room here is barely enough. The car looks speedy with its smooth sweeping lines, and is uncommon- ly neat

The engine has overhead valves worked by two overhead cam- shafts, with the inlet on the va- side and the exhaust on the near- side. The sparking plugs" are ac- cessible with a box spanner be- tween the two valve covers in the centre of the head. The cylinder head Can be raised complete without upseting the timing. On the near side are the four-branch exhaust manifold with its forward pipe, the filler, which has a sepa- rate breather pipe. the diprod, the starter aft, and, below, a nan- die at the side. by which the sump can be drained. The exhaust pipe is taken out and rather low at the back of the car. On the offside there are two synchroniz- ed carburettors. Ignition, is by magneto; this is driven through a vernier coupling by the genera- tor in front. The magneto, being. far back, makes the make-and- break and distributor impossible to see directly, and a mirror must be used. It would be better if

STOMACH TROUBLES

An

English Doctor

writes :-

"I find that 'Bisurated! Magnesia taken after moad of my meals is the only thing that keeps me free from pain and discomfort, and I take it regularly. I often prescribe it for my patients, and have had very good results."

(Signed) Dr. H, G, A., M.R.C.S.. L.R.C.P..

~HE English doctor is the most conservative medical THE world, and when be as only recommends but personally uses a remedy there can be no more con- vincing proof of its efficacy. This doctor is but one of many who constantly advise the use of Bisurated • hiagoela in all cases of indigestion. Most stomach trouble is caused by acidity, and the reason why * Binrated' Magnesia gives quick rolled is that it in stantly neutralises excess, acid and soothes, heals and atrengthens the inflamed stomach lining. Nothing.could be simpler, saler or sarer. If you suffer with indigestion

or stomach disorder of any kind put your fälth in European science and make an end of your troubles by taking 'Bisurated Magnesia after eating or whenever pain is felt..

Steering is by cam and roller. The drive is passed to the back wheels through a Wilson type preselective four-speed gearbox with oside control, an open propeller-shaft with metal uni- versal joints, and a three-quarter floating spiral bevel axle. The metal noor over the gearbox is screwed down. The suspension is by: half-elliptical springs the front are given reverse camber and have an extra long leat on the top-which work with fric- tional shock absorbers. Four me- chanical brakes are worked by pedal with rods, and the drums are 13in. in diameter. The press. ed channel section frame is atly braced by six cross-members and reinforced at the front to give added stability.

On The Road

The engine is small and likes high revolution rate. The speeds and acceleration obtainable with this unit of only 9.6 nomlaal horse power speak clearly of efficiency. The engine does not slack at low speed, but the best results are obtainable in the high range of piston speed, and the preselector gear is there to make them easily available... The test rates show that the engine has courage and revels in its speed. Except for a certain amount of exhaust drum it runs reasonably quietly, and is well balanced. With the gearing, the car can be rapidly accelerated and in an emergency decelerated. With a quick change into second when traveling at 40 on top, the brak- ing effect was smooth and even, and the engine did not scream. The gear is fairly positive, as was shown by the car's disinclination to start at the foot of the old Dashwood Hill on third of second, but when first was used for mov- ing away from standstill the drive was always firmly, smoothly,"and progressively taken up. The pre- selection. lever is arranged like an ordinary but diminutive change' speed straight-thiough lever on he offside. There is a catch for everse, though this might be less sharp to the finger, the positions are easily felt, and the lever is well to hand. The steering was steady and light; there is a spring wheel of 17in. diameter. The suspension was too stil in effect. It seems. to be traditional in a car of this sort that springing must be hard to keep it on the road at high speed, and with frictional shock absor- bers this makes the machine bob- ble about too much at rates be- tween 30 and 40. This movement does not help steady, light pres- sure on the accelerator pedal, nor

Is the pedal position as comfor table as it might be. Independ enu front-wheel suspension is, in my opinion, the only real remedy.

Corners. Beautifully-

memorial, exhibition a. the Tate Gallery, Londes, Q1 60 00 pictures and water colours by Wu- MacTaggart will enlighten Londoners and thousands of vist. tors about a great Scottish pain- „ter, and will explain the reason

for his fame in his own country.

MacTaggart, born 100 years ago, has up till now been practically only a name in England-If even' that-and among some who have beard of him he is regarded mere- ly as a scottish myth.

POETIC VISION

Here we see him at air periods. from his early style, in which the rightly drawn figures have a sug- gestion of the pre-Raphaelite school, to his later and mature work, in which he stands BS A pioneer and forerunner, in the painting of light and movement in nature, in the raising of the key of colour, and with poetic vision presenting vivid personal inter- pretations that give him a place among the greatest of the tm. pressionists.

SHIMMERING BEAUTY-

I have heard MacTaggart con- demned for not being something else from what he is—for not be- ing mainly a constructor of form- al design in a pleture. Well, Mac- Taggart spontaneously chose what appealed to him, and we can see here how happy "the arrangement of landscape and coast scene and. the grouping of figures often turn- ed out to be. But undoubtedly it is the shimmering beauty of co- lour and the living quality of his work-a quality that suggests the very movement of wind and waves -which make him the great pain- ter he is.

SEA PIECES We see this in most of the sea pieces here-The White Surf," for instance, and "All the Choral Waters Bang" of wonderfully moving greens and blues and opal- escent tints-in "The Girls Bath- ing"-in which the flesh, colour sings against the sex-in / the dramatic picture. "The Storm,” and many more.

The figures in the later works are assimilated to their surround- ings,, and often suggest, not ar- rested motion, but something ac- tually, if vaguely, moving.

PORTRAIT PAINTER

And it is interesting to have the automatically sketchy balrns on the beach with some of his early pictures, like "Spring," painted in 1863, as careful in handling of figures as the work of the pre- Raphaelites, and even at that early date remarkable for the way in which sunlight is suggested.

There is interest, too, in seeing examples of MacTaggart's work as

a portrait painter, particularly in the group known as "Moss Roses:" And I may add that his fluent handling of water-colour. shows his skill in depicting the flickering light and movement in the me- dium.

Almost all the pictures shown have been lent, by Scottish owners. The exhibition will be open till July 31.

the offside pull-up hand lever, though having but small clear- ance for the hand, especially when the preselector lever is in the top or back position, is of the sensible kind used by Lagonda's for a number of years. The saloon, submitted for test by Messrs. Warwick Wright; had a surprising turn of speed, particularly as the engine is only a little over I litre capacity. Allowing for a rather fast speedometer, I found it would" do about 40.62 or 50, 75 on second, third, and top without being har- shly treated, On the upgraded

stretch the 15 was increased to 51 and the 30 at the bottom of the 1 in 224 Dashwood Hill was raised to 32 at once, and this rate was steadily · maintained throughout without variation. Starting the climb at 30 on third, and changing into top at 40 the hill was finished at 35 m.p.h. With a standing start at the foot of the old hill on first, changing into second at 10 m.ph, and into third at 30, the crest was just car ried-the rate being 15 miles an hour. With a standing" start at the bottom on first and a change into second at. 10 m.p.h, the, en- gine passed the crest at 38, hav ing - accelerated the whole way. There were two persons on board;" the roads were dry, the very alight breeze was favourable.
