CATHOLIC SISTER SENTENCE
Of 1935

Shanghai, May 13. According to the latest statistics issued by the Inspectorate General of Customs, foreign trade figures for the first quarter of 1935 are: imports $254,000,388, being $33.- 645,426 less than in the corres ponding period last year; exports, for the three months of January, February and 'March, $135,818,605, being $6,891,568 higher than in the corresponding period Jast year. At first glance the tendency | towards imports decrease and exports increase may be taken as an improvement in China's foreign trade. But upon a closer examina- Lion it will be found that the
changed situation was chledy due to the rapidly rising price of silver. Therefore imports into China in terms of money may be less than those of last year, but that does not necessarily mean that the total quantity of imports to China has decreased.
Further, the item of foodstuffs topped the list of imports, very plainly showing that rural condi tlong in
China are deplorable.. Statistics of Customs reveal that foreign rice imported into China. alone for the month of March - amounted to $7,689,380. There are several causes ascribed for this enormous rice import: firstly, the floods in North China and the drought in Kiangsu and Cheklauz
