March, 1918, bis Corps was on the extreme right of the British Army. Under relentless pressure it slowly fell back, and at last had - the extraordinary experience of being swept entirely away from its own Srmy and brought under French "command, with French troops- fighting on either side.

Its losses were appalling, with about 15,000 killed, wounded or raissing. Some battalions were almost annihilated, but it was unbroken in an inevitable retire- ment against highly superior

forces.

From 1991 until his retirement

from the Army in 1928 Sir Richard was General Officer Commanding in-Chief of the Western Command. He married in 1594 Helen, daughter of the Inte Major Battiscombe of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and had one son and one daughter.
