OF SINGAPORE'S DEFENCES

Singapore, May 4,

That, in thanksgiving for the blessing of His Majesty's reign and in commemoration of the Silver Jubilee, this Council approves a grant of £500,000 as a gift from His Highness the Sultan, and the State of Johore to the Imperial Government for the" purpose of accelerating the completion of the defences of Singapore" was the text of a resolution passed at an emergency meeting of the State Council, Johore, yesterday.

HH. resolution Moving the Tungku Mahkota said: My Royal tather has now reigned for forty years and during his reign the. financial position of the State has improved to a degree which gives him great satisfaction and pride.

In order to show his affection for His Gracious Majesty King George V, under whose "protection this prosperity has been attained, hia pleasure at having lived to see His Majesty's Silver Jubffee and his satisfaction at the prosperous condition of this his State,. His Highness the Sultan desires to make A gift to the Imperial Government in thanksgiving for the blessings of His Majesty's reign and in commemoration of the Silver Jubilee.

1935 was about $41,000,000, which sum includes the Opiùm Revenue Replacement Fund of $15,000,000. This surplus will in all-probability continue to increase from year to year.

This State has a large surplus due to the prosperity and good administration of His Majesty's reign and His Highness considers that the sum of £500,000 is com- mensurate with the occasion and well within the resources of the State.

LONG-STANDING. AFFECTION The affection and friendship of Johore rulers towards Sovereigns of Great Britain is of long stand- ing. It originated with the late Bultan Abu Bakar and Queen Victoria of gracious memory.

His Highness the Sultan has renewed the friendship by his several visits to England in recent years when Their Highnesses were by Their graciously received Majesties the King and Queen.

It is also of interest to, mention King here that His Majesty

It reminds me of the very anxious inquiries made by Queen Victoria, with whom he was a very great favourite, through her Equerry several times daily, and of the Prince of Wales-later | Acting General Adviser, said that King Edward VII-who came se- veral times daily and when.
