ELEGANCE THE NOTE

Of The Jubilee. Courts

Presentation is the only occas- Jon upon which formal dress is essential and for which the de- signer has to include two axed and inevitable features. If you go to Court you must wear the traditional headdress and you must have a traini

The train lends itself to inûn- Itely greater variations than the headdress, of which the three curled ostrich feathers and the breath of tulle remain permanent features. For, provided that it

does not fall below a certain standard of length and import- ance, your train may be made of almost anything you please, and adorned accordingly, so long as It is in harmony with the dress to which it belongs.

It may be so much an integral part of the gown that it is im- possible to visualise the two se- parated into component parts. Or it may be so obviously super- imposed for the occasion that the dress loses nothing and very pos- sibly gains quite a great deal from its subsequent elimination. In many cases, the train, however detachable, bears a close rela- tionship to the gown, and is often "of the same material; but ex- quisite old lace or lame may be added happily to a gown made of quite different stuffs,

Another point in which Court dresses differ from the major- ity of modern, clothes is that there is usually a much stronger line of demarcation between the

ages.

On ordinary occasions the de- butante and her mother may wear very similar things, if they are similar in type and build. For the Courts, however, it is destr- able that their attire should dif- fer quite considerably.

Distinction of Years

2

No one need mind this. What an opportunity for a mother to be permitted a dignity that the friendly impudence of the youn-

generation denies her as ger rule; and. It is not a bad moment for the very young person to learn. In the most agreeable man-- ner possible, that exquisite trans- parencies and a simplicity which is not in the least sickly are really worthy of her consideration- much more telling, indeed, at her present age, than the sophistica- tion in which she will be able to indulge so much more effec-' tively later on..

An eye-view of the latest de- signs for the 1935 Courts gives 115 exactly what we should be. prepared to expect, considering Arst the particular year it is, sec- ondly, the promise of an unusual ly gay and grand season; and, thirdly, the tendencies of recent fashions.

There is

definite note of ele-

gance about all the new designs: an elegance of line and fabrics, of colour combination, and of de- tall, with a most satisfying "ab- sence of stunts and that striving after startling effects which too often ends in being merely ludic- bus.

There IN also a noticeable divergence of type. We have 're- miniscences of the Middle Ages and of the 1930's; of the Regency. and of classical Greece. All of which means that the woman who knows her type can be sure of appearing "to the very best. advantage. especially it she can command the assistance of an expert dressmaker,

Moire" is one of the lovellest materials for Court gowns of th severer kind. Peter Russell has made an exquisite dine in white moire taffetas with a very much off-the-shoulder decolletage and a train of the taffetas lined with pale pink chiffon..

''

Fleated Lame

The most outstanding of his Court dresses is in silver lame. pleated in various widths, so that it swirls around the figure with a grace which is an enchanting combination of ancient Egypt and modern England,

A glorious gown in which the Tare beauty of the material, the delicacy of the colouring and the perfection of line are at one, is made of glasa Brocade. The col- our is a faint lavender pink; the train is of the same stuff as the dress, which has A dignified cross-over bodice and swinging skirt.

A Coult dress which would be an admirable choice for a tall and slender-girl, or," alternatively, for a woman with good propor- tions and distinct breadth of shoulder. It is made of heavy white satin and has triangular, fan-pleated sections of the satin Uned with tender green falling from each shoulder. The train, also of the satin lined with green, is cleverly divided into knotted sections just before, it reaches the floor, and ends in trailing fan- pleated strands,

A sandal shoe is definitely kinder to the foot than any other style, but when it has a plain vamp, like a court shoe, it is more in keeping with, the ele- gance of a Court gown than is опе of the very open' sandals, which are so good for dancing.

Gloves should come above the elbow, and generously, not as if they had to be persuaded so far, almost by force.

ROUND THE

SHOPS

All the shops have had a busy Lime, preparing for Easter Week for you must know how women feel about holidays-they do not consider a holiday REALLY one. unless they had a new dress, new hat new shoes, new gloves-it does. not matter which so long as it is something new, to celebrate the occasion with

Take Lane Crawford's Ladles Salon for Instance. They are Easter ready not only for the Holidays but also for a far more important occasion-the Jubilee and froeks for the holidays and garden parties may be seen at this popular store. There was one in blue and white organdie with frills at the hem and small ones at the waist with a big black bow attached to the front of the dress.

Another model Was in sülk organza with little cape sleeves and square neck, trimmed with a small spray of pink flowers about the neck and the waist. Another the flowered pretty dress was organdle with net which had a taffeta sup. In all a display to gladden any woman's heart.

AT MAYO'S Mayo's are particularly for- tunate in that they have only just received a new consignment of hats in the latest summer styles and colours. The fortunate ones will be those who have had time to go into the shop before

to-day (Friday) so that they can have a really and truly Bright Easter.

WASHING DRESSES

One of my friends who heard me talking about the hats and said that it was all very well getting one, but what is to be done insofar as a new dress is concerned. The answer is easy Take a trip to Eve's and there you will see an array of washable dresses, They are decidedly smart too, and while on the subject, of dresses must mention.

RIVELLE

Who have also just received the very newest and cutest in suminer dresses. They are there for the asking. dresses in the latest de- signs and materials. Happy is the woman who has got one of them for certainly they are just the thing to get for the Race Meeting.

INITIAL PINS Maizee's are expecting a new lot of hats and dresses and those initial pins that are getting to be so popular in addition to being such useful things. They are also waiting for a new consignment of cheap cotton wash dresses, and when they do come along. I was told that one and all of them are "guaranteed to satisfy."

Don't get nervous about INFLUENZA

CLOTHES

For The Busy Woman

Paris dressmakers have been faced with a few stern facts in Is recent years, one of which the need of the busy woman for good, practical clothes.

"

To their credit let it be said that they have risen to the bc- casion. They have made the tailormade the Feystone to the" arch of good dressing.

A

woman can now dress in tailored clothes all day and be counted among those who know what good dressing means.

Where she has.to use her im- agination 15 in the matter of materials. A tailormade in ser- viceable tweed is a very different thing from one in linen, taffeta, satin or figured crepe. An evening dress of tailored simpli- city is not in the least like "s .copy of masculine attire. The tailored clothes of the well- dressed woman are altogether feminine in style and very varied.

You will quickly see vantage of skirt

the ad- ore good coat and when travelling, or ma busy life at home when la pretty Httle dress does not fit the occa- sion of the morning, though it would be perfect for the after- noon if you had time to go home and change. How many days in a busy woman's He there are when that time is not availablel It is then that the coat and skirt is such a helpful ensemble. * An afternoon blouse can be

2 worn in the "morning with plain scarf neatly folded to hide the "sophistication of fussy Jabot or frill.

A bunch of camelllas or gardenias can be carried in a bag and produced when wanted. A morning metal or leather necklet can be changed for paste ornament with no trouble or carrying of luggage.

It is encouraging to know what quick changes can be made with a tailormade coat and skirt. But→→ and there is al- ways this same "but" -the the coat and skirt must be well cut, and in good material...

Silk Suita

In format mood the coat and skirt of silk is a most becoming ensemble. A little black, brown,

blue, or grey tafeta coat and

with s skirt to wear

dainty blouse is charming, and looks ́right at Ascot or a homely party. Surah silk is good for tailor- mades, too, and some wonien look well in black satin,

Not long ago a little Russian princess wore one in white satin at a wedding. Her accessories→→→ shoes, gloves, hat, and bag-were black. The blouse was in satin like the skirt, with cut jet but- tons,

This summer. the coat and skirt in figured silk will be worn. In black crêpe de Chine figured white, in navy spotted red, green and black, in grey with green and red spots, there are. coats and skirts to be worn with white washing blouses, more or lesa elaborately worked.

The well-cut linen blouse goes with most materials, and may be chosen to match the colour of one of the spots on the spotted materials which are so much worn at the "moment."
