RUGGLES OF RED GAP” CLAUDETTE PLAYS FOR
One of the dramatic and original highlights of Para- .. mount's "RUGGLĖS OF RED GAP," is the sequence in which Charles Laughton, as the only Englishman in a congregation of Americans, recites. Abraham Lin- coln's address at Gettysburg.. He does this because he happens to be the only person present who knows the famous address.
In discussing this incident with an American editor Laugh- -ton mentioned the fact that it was really. British appreciation of the Gettysburg address that made it famous, All the Ameri- can papers had paid all the at- tention to the hour and half. address by Secretary of State Seward and · had' mentioned merely the fact that Lincoln spoke.
The address however, had beer: sent to London and it was the London "Tinies" of that day which stated that Lincoln's speech would become immortal and Beward's forgotten. America paid tribute to Lincoln's address only when copies of the "Times" arrived in that country.

CHAPTER ONE
Once again Barbara had slip- bed away from the castle to walk, alone in Caddam Wood. As she' hurried through the gardens of Lord "Rintoul's estate, watching carefully that she was not seen by the servants, or by Lady Eve- linta, the Lord's argus-eyed sister, she wondered if she might not be eaving the castle for the last time.
These escapades of Barbara's.. were frowned upon by the castle folk, and, in a way, she could sympathize with their attitude. She knew she was no kin to them, but a child abandoned by some zypsies. Lord. Rintoul, had 'made' the helpless Uttle thing his ward, and Lady Evellaa "had done her sisterly. duty in bringing up the waif as befitted the ward of a no- bleman. So well did she suceed that Barbara grew into a beauti- ful, accomplished girl, and Lord Rintoul decided to marry her.
Since he had announced his Wishes in this matter, Lady Evel- ina bad grown more watchful than ever
lest the gypsy blood show itself in the girl, and Bar- bara scarcely blamed her. Even was doing Dow was most unconventional for Nine- teenth Century Scotland. She
what she
was not only going out unattend- ed, but she had put off the rich dress which was here as the Lord's ward and fiancee, and wore the colourful rags of her no- mad forebear."
At first it had not occurred to Barbara to question the fact that she was going to marry, Lord Rintoul, büt as the time drew near she began to wonder. Was this what she really wanted in life? Lord Rintoul was kind, yes, but he was twice her age, at least."
Even at noontime, when the sun la high the depths of Cad- dam Wood are in twilight. The old trees are so big and their luxuriant branches so thick the light filters down" subdued and changed to an eerie intensity dif- ferent from anywhere else. No. thing disturbs the silence but the occasional song of a bird, or when, the wind rising the forest murmurs with tiny echoes of the
clashing leaves.
It always gave Barbara a sensë. of complete isolation, though the Castle was nearby, and the tiny hamlet of Thrums lay on the other side. Presently, her uneasy" mood passed, and she began to sing gally as she wandered Idly about, stopping to pick the red rowan berries, or to laugh at the antics of a squirrel. She was thoroughly annoyed when a vofce brought her up short
"Woman," it said sternly.
Barbara didn't recognize the voice, but she knew who spoke new minister at the Anoid Licht Church in Thruins. Nobody else the moment she saw him, the in the village dressed like that, Besides, she had heart him de- scribed as the Little Minister, and indeed he was slight and boyish looking, though he was trying now to be very serious and elder- ly..
On the defensive, Barbara re- sorted to the role for which she was dresed, and became Babble the Gypsy. She rolled innocent, roguish eyes at him and listened with
irritating, wide-eyed noncomprehension while scolded:
