Cycle Of Fashion Silhouette For

Silver Jubilee

Dress Design From 1825 To 1935

Suver-Plated satins, spun glass brocade, spun glass lace, Chinese lacquered satin, as soft as the fin- est crepe de Chine, and infinitely. beautiful in its rich Oriental col- During and gold" or silver inlay, glistening taffetas and matt sur- faced sliks, are among the fabrics for Silver Jubilee dresses.

So diverse are the periods of fashion which have influenced leading London dress creators in their use of these materials that even the "expert fashionists who. have the first view of the new models are often puzzled to place the origin of a 1935 mode, apart from the genius of the modern creator.

TWELVE YARDS ROUND HEM

a

A slender frock of taffeta shown at a recent dress display. with skirt measuring 12yds round at the hen; for all its sinky hip ne, takes us back pe- riously near the crinoline vogue

which began in 1825 with the same type of stiffenka hem and held sway for three decades.

Dresses were wider in the early' thirties, and skirts became more and more voluminous as the years went by till they reached cnor. mous proportions in the fifties and 'sixties, when gigantic Jeg o'mutton sleeves appeared,, de- signed to give a certain amount of "balance" to the shoulders.

These too, were the days when off-the-shoulder fichu lines were Introduced on evening gowns;" and 13 the crinoline gradually de- creased in size, smaller waists were cultivated by women of far- hion. Then the low shoulder cor- sage was kept in position by a draw-thread of ribbon. This sea- son the more daring of the off- the-shoulder evening gowns have "boned" bodices which provide a senest of security to the wearer- .although onlookers may have some moments of suspense and the folds of the corsage. are ar- ranged with a modernist precision, giving greater beauty of line. The 1880 crinoline... evening dresses were also marvels of fine colour and soft fabrics. As painted by the artists of past decades these evening frocks were far more be coming in their lavender, pink and blue lisse, silk and lace, than. Ia day-time terms of puce and plum-coloured checked tadeta criss-crossed with lemon and brown and adorned with pinked ruchings of pale green. They ran. to primary colours in those days, subdued by three-quarter length Jackets, with wide sleeves made in darker tones of velvet or satin, and sometunes embroidered In self-coloured" braida.

Hips began to fall into line with smaller waists in the later 'seven- ties and skirts tightly atting at the top, slightly trained and much betrimmed below the knees, be- came narrower at the hem.

ROUND THE

SHOPS

Lane Crawford's have mar- vellous range of new Hats, ready to meet the sunshine. There are really beautiful hats in delightful summer colours, the latest new straws, and styles.

The little green Bengaline straw of light weight, turned up in the front faced with yellow and brown stitched allk was most attractive, so was another model of the same shade with the, high crown com- bined in brown,

FORERUNNER OF BUSTLE To those that like felts there is Then came "the forerunner af nothing to match what was on dis- the bustle, a full stiffened line play.. Large and small brims trim- flowing in folds from the waist, med, with tiny little posies on the achieved by cutting the skirt on top of the crowns in all pastel circular lines, with' » snaped back- shades, especially the big light centre seam. More than one degreen hat finished-off with yellow. signer of this season's dresses is

using this graceful back line, now- ing from the waist with à soften- ed stiffness due to a silk isketa lining under the skirt of spun glass lace or lacquered salin.

The 'eighties were the

"dark „ages” of fashion. Heavily pleated skirts, tight sleeves. Anishing at the elbow the "dolman" bonnets and the bustle standing, out "at" right-angles to the waistline, pre- valled. Some of the bustles were enormous, accentuated by polo- naise draperies, and tight bodices with pointed waist. When bodices were moulded to the figure by means of many shaped and "bon- ed" seams women stood for hours at a time during a ätting; and a leader of fashion sometimes loss her temper and-in one classic in- stance-slapped her atter's face.

BUTTERFLY BONNETS

The nineties took a frivolous turn. Bonnets became butterfly affairs perched on the top of curls. Poke-fronted hats with high trimming made their ap pearance. High przed shoulders are shown on some of the caped tailor-mades this season. This decade brought "in the broad shoulder line, with its puffed slee- ves like balloons and umbrella skirts.

the twentieth century.. Came with its natural silhouette and many versions of the princess frock, worn with wide-brimmed. hats measuring, 40in 'to 50lm around the brim; the five-eight tunics, seen this geason again; long, slender skirts reaching the ground, and waists which were movable slightly up or down each

season.

Dress was decidedly beautiful during this period, which was the transition stage from the ugliness of fashion to the present simple < and becoming lines of dress. One can see this change in a charm- ing frock, now in the London Mu- seum, wore by Lady Victoria: Fores... ter as a trainbearer to the Queen" at her Coronation. The dress, made, of white silk, is moulded to the figure on princess lines. The front of the gown is adorned with. a long panel of hand embroidery, a square trellis pattern in crystal bugles, and pearls spreading into a bow design on the bodice at the foot of the skirt. A long diamond brooch is centied in the corsage.

CRINOLINE'S THIRTY YEARS ! The crinoline vogue lived for nearly 30 years. To-day fashion changes omcially four times a year: No wonder the dress crea- tors of the day delve into all ages for their inspiration: And the result, Judging from the dress shows this season, is certain charm and distinction that has not been given to woman befora, She has the feminine, ristle of Victorian days, the beauty of the princess silhouette transtormed into the grace and chic of the 1935 streamlined frocks, distin guished. for their beauty of fabric, colouring and design.

Paris Evening Gowns

THAT BLOOM IN. THE SPRING

Flattering detalls for evening' wear make some of the most at- tractive features of fashion in Paris, writes a correspondent.

are

It was only when I saw the de- butante gown made by Jenný from turquoise blue that tulle seemed such stuff dreams made of With this gown she changes her evening tune 'from a completely sophisticated outline to one of youthful volume,

Volume, however, falls like a mdst over a straight underskirt. This is delicately flounced and a spray of pink roses just above its hem appears to reflect another spray posed at the waist of a dropped shoulder corsage.

A red and white rose clamped together set off another corsage at the centre of a dropped décol~, leté on a black taffeta gown while one in it blaamsettled down ilke a spreading rosette at the base of a low V-back décolleté:

Red camellas are worn with navy blue.

Before leaving youth with its silm waistline, take note of Jodel- le's white lace gown that has a V décolleté, cleverly designed short puff sleeves-and waistbelt of

roses made from dark red... satin. Taffeta foundations add zest to trall fabrics. They have lesser volume and may be quite straight at ground length with allt motifs for comfort in walk- Ing.

Follow the new satin evening shoe with broad instep strap and little squared tos-cap. Heels are of the square block variety and are somewhat low in style. This low heeled innovation for even- ing slippers is a recurring fashion note. Nothing could be better to dance in than a flat-heeled shoe... It gives a perfect poise. -.

Try capping the shoulder ne by talle tape over a silhouette of floral printed taffeta, plain mat-crêpe or satin, to waist or Intermediary ground length. lengths will play the diaphanous rôle that will make women look ethereal.

to

These floating accessories evening gowns look charming in straight lengths falling beneath 'ruiled, rucked, ruched or double tucked necklines. They are us ually of primitive colourS black to show off on plain fabrics. while a vivid colour from a floral print might stress a selected shade. Brown an amber la favoured also poppy-red from a field design print

One of the special notes Is Ro- yal blue for wear over a plain colour. It contrasts, perfectly next, white, ash pink, and most of the sweet pes tones,

A short plain taneta capelet in a dark colour selected from a floral design, is another scheme.. In one instance, the capelet points at back and front beneath an upstanding straight collar of oblong shape composed of piped lines massed closely together. A big bow-tie in front completes a charming note on a yellow-green brown and poppy-red taffeta print.
