I have received the letter signed by yourself as President and by the Vice-Presidents of the Society for the Protection of Children asking me to allow my name to be used in connection with n general appeal to the public for funds. I need hardly say that I regard the proposal as a great compliment to myself and shall be only too delighted to allow my name to be so used. I have the greatest interest in the work done by the Society and I trust that the appeal will be a great success and that the So- ciety will be enabled to continue the excellent work which it has carried out during the past few years.

I congratulate the Society on the generous response which has already been made to its appeal

COMPANY MEETING

“I need hardly remind you that the times remain anzlous; competition increases and is more severe. The year 1934 has been for the whole world a year of expedient and experiment, and, with Hong Kong, our Company has felt and is feeling the effects of the world wide depression," said Mr. W. H. Bell, when he presided at the annual general meeting of the Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock Co., Ltd, which was held at the Company's Offices at Queen's Building yesterday.

A decrease in the gross profl; of $40,667.88, as compared with 1933, was reported, and at the subsequent extraordinary meeting' two resolutions for the writing down of capital and writing off of reserves, and for the issue of fresh capital, were passed. The Chaliman stated that with the passing of the resolutions there would be an annual saving of about $100,000 on account of de- preciation and over $60,000 on account of interest on overdraft.
