CARS OF TO-DAY CAR FOR PRICE
The Ford De Luxe
The 10 h.p. Ford de luxe saloon, with what is called double en- trance, is a smooth traveller with much acceleration and ready po- wer for its size. The car is partly streamlined.
R
The front seats of this four- door model are comfortable; en- trance is good: the driver can get in from the nearside with a little manoeuvring; the seals are adjustable; and the window win- ders allow draughtless' ventilation. The view all round is good, espe- clally for a partly streamlined body, though the pillars could be, narrower. The seating at the back is contfortable, and entrance is cleverly devised. Head room is" suffielent, and the roof is not un- duly low. The flush-Atting traf- fic signalling arms are ingeniously worked. To work the nearside arm the spread lever knob has merely to be slightly turned to the left, and vice-versa, while a red light is shown in the centre the knob whenever an arm is
up.
IL
The engine has sidė valves and a detachable head. and, with the clutch and gearbox, forms a unit held at three points. on rubber: On the offside there are merely the worm and nut steering box--- with a ratio of 10, to 1—the star-. ter, and, on the head, the com- bined fan and dynamo, for the driving belt of which there are means of adjustment. With the upswept front, wings the engine is rather low, but the tappets are not adjustable. The sparking. plugs in the head, the vertically driver make-and-break and dis- tributor with automatic advance and retard. the down-draught carburettor, and the oil filler tube are all get-at-able, while the me- "chanical petrol pump, which has a flexible lead, and the diprod are Drainage not difficult to reach.
of the oil must be done from be- low, as also replenishment of the gearbox and back axle.
A dry signie-plate spring-cus- hioned clutch is fitted. The gear- box has only three forward speeds. There 13 synchromesh for second and three-quarter floating axle has spiral bevel drive. As both axles have transverse springs they are stayed with radius rods. The four mechanical brakes are work- ed by pedal, or the back ones only by central hand lever. Rods apply the force throughout, and these are rather long but are tensioned. The transverse spring in front Is set and shackled forward on the axle and the one behind aft of the axle a good arrangement. There are four double-acting hyd- raulic shock absorbers. The ge- neral design of the car is clever in its reduction of weight.
ON THE ROAD
OF CYCLE
:
Hitler's Promise To German People
At the opening of the annual international motor show in Berlin Herr Hitler promised the German public a motor-car that would cost -no more to buy and run than a
four stroke motor cycle.
SLİM
"I am glad to be able to nounce," he declared. "that 2 brillant engineer and his staff have succeeded in finishing the designs for a German people's car. The rst model will be tried out during the summer.
Herr Hitler spoke surrounded by rows of shining cars, and did not pesitate to claim that the present
the
prosperity of the German motor- car industry, as revealed in number and variety of the cars on view, was largely due to Nazi encouragement.
In Germany three years ago there was one motor-car for every 111 persons To-day there is a motor-car for "every 70 persons, and it is Herr Hitler's ambition to make the motor-car as popular 1 Germany as it is in the United! States of America"
One of the purposes of the ex- hibition is to bring home to the public the importance to Germany of the motoring industry and its many allled industries. Herr Hitler estimated in his speech that about 1,000,000 Germans were employed in making, motor-cars and their accessories and the roads for the motor-cars to

"Elijah' and the Messiah, '"'!' This undoubtedly would be the answer of every keen choralist, if asked what in his opinion are the two favourite choral masterpieces in England to-day. Mendelssohn's music, in some respects Bot unlike Handel's, is particularly remark able for its beautiful vocal writing, Not that It is easy-far from that but rather because it is grateful to sing, and is always melodions to the ear.

Lady White's Death

London, March 8. The thirty-fifth anniversary of the relief of Ladysmith after the slege of rather nore than four months, was marked when a group of omcers and men who had been. present during the siege gathered in Portland Place to lay wreaths before the statue of Sir George White, who WES in command throughout. During the brief ceremony, the news came of the death of Lady White, Sir George's distinguished widow. the date being a remarkable coincidence

Another characteristic is the versatility with which every form of vocal writing is exploited, which makes the work intensely interest- ing from Arst to last. So keen was Mendelssohn on his story, that when asked by the Birmingham Musical Festival Committee in 1848 to write an oratorio, he rejected the efforts of others and wrote his own bretto. Thus one can see was in the 18th Hussars during the secret of his tremendous the siege, was chairman, and Com- climaxes and his masterly portray-mander C. R.
