HOW EMDEN MET

Cocos Cable Staff
Real Heroes
The death of Mr., F. de Horsey Farrant, recalls the famous ́ight between HM.A.S. Sydney and the German raiding cruiser: Emden, for it was, largely through his pre- sence of mind. and forethought that the raider met her fate.
Mr. Farrant was attached to the foreign staff of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company,
and served in the Far East for many years. He was, in charge at Cocos Island when the war broke out. The news of the Emden's raiding expeditions during" August. 1914, engaged Mr. Farrant's atten- tion in view of the most important lines of communication at Cocos. Island
Although the probability of a visit by the German cruiser at that time seemed rather remote, Mr. Farrant, with much före-. thought, organised the small com- | munity of 32 met into a state of preparedness, although unarmed.
Spåre Instruments were secreted in various parts of the island, and, in addition, a constant watch was maintained from the roof of the staff quarters, day and night, The wisdom of Mr. Farrant's pre- cautions was amply proved on the morning of November 9, when, in the early dawn, news of the Em- den's approach was broadcast by radio and cable from the island. The 'engagement of the Emden by the Sydney three hours later Is now history, but comparatively few know that contact with the enemy raider was so speedily' brought about by this astute and unassuming Englishman
The late Mr. F. de H. Farrant was manager, of the Hong Kong Branch of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company from 1919 to 1920 when he retired on pension.
Clever
They had just been married and were about to start on their wed- ding trip. He was embarrassed to the point of forgetfulness, but he met the situation expertly.
"Why Harry, you've bought only one ticket," reproached the bride.., "Just like me, dear," flashed Harry; "always forgetting myself,”

The Story Of A Great Lover, A Great Artist-The Most Charming
Rascal Of All Time
(BY LEWIS' ALLEN BROWNE)
Benvenuto was forced to use bis dagger with his left hand.
No more skilled artisan in precious metals and gems lived in all the Old World during the 16th century than Benvenuto Cellini of Florence. At the same time he was a veritable firetrand, when wronged or thought that he was wronged; while his fame as a great lover whe almost as great as his fame as a goldsmith, Della Santini, his one love, disappears with her mother, to marry another; he... to told, whereupon Benvenuto swears that women are for toys, not matrimony, so far as he is con- cerped. The war between Charles V and Francis I brought dire distress to Italy. In Rome, at this time, Pope Clement appoints Benvenuta captain of his bombardiers and he saves the castle with his skill, but he disobeys an order not to fire a salvo, given by Cardinal Orinsi, who orders that Benvenu-- to be hanged at once.
"I was ordered," Benvenuto replied to Cardinal Orinsi, "to fire as I saw fit, since I was placed here as captain of the bom bardiers, Your Eminence. I saw fit to fire as I did because the enemy was thickest there
before you took orders, Orinsi my judgment was best. The thing that I wanted done and which Benvenuto carried out, has routed the enemy.""
"No excuses! You deliberately ared the salvo that will cause the rabble to massacre us, but I intend to see you hanged first, to make sure of that much. It is with de- light that I shall see you hanged, It was quite so. Cardinal Orinsi you swaggering, impudent Floren-witched the increasing numbers of time!"
the enemy hurrying toward the north gates. After a moment his excuse was:
"One moment, Your Eminence, Benevenuto called, in, a sweet voice. The Cardinal turned to meer and hls' face went pale, for Benvenuto had turned one of the heavy swivel
guns about so that the muzzle was
directed toward the Cardinal who stood at the head of the descend ing stairway, notwenty feet away. "If your Eminence but take one step toward the stairs,” Benvenuto said, still quite pleasantly, "there will be need of another Cardinal to order me hanged."
Ronted the Enemy Orinsi stared at the big gun, and then at Benverato who stood, firing torch in hand, ready to dis- charge it.

laughter of Clement ringing in his ears adding to his fury against Benvenuto.
FAMILY NAMES
IN THE EAST
Choice Of Surnames
Spreading
Turks, Egyptians and Moslems of India are beginning to choose.. family, ■ names, of surnames. Gerally they are not a very an- cient institution avea in the West, starting only about nine centuries ago as a consequence of the adop tion of baptismal or Christian names. That fact did not recom- mend the practice to Mosleins, and in India it still is a deterrent, though the Findus have acknow- ledged its convenience.
Mustafa Kemal of Turkey, after abolishing titles as not consistent with the principles of the Turkish Republic, has now ordained that horeditary family names shall be adopted as a better means of iden tification than patronymics with tribal names attached. In the Mos- lem East it is common for school- masters to find half a dozen boys in one class bearing the same single name, such as Ahmad or Muham mad."
Kemal has already selected his family name. It sounds modern enough; it is Ataturk. But it means Chief Turk. Ismet Pasha has lost the Pasha, that title having been barred. His new name is Inonu. There will be no more Pashas. A gas, Effendis, Boys, ajis, Hafizes or Hojas, nor will women be entitled to be designated lanum (Lady), Civil ranks' «are done away with. Officers will use the title of their military rank, the highest being Marshal, General and Admiral
Ia Egypt surnames are being evolved in this mannar: Saleh (son of) Ali-(who was the son of) Muhammad; or, Suleiman el (of) Ramalouti (his birthplace); or a physical "characteristio is being ased, like Tekin Effendi, meaning Mr. Stout. As an occupation is often hereditary, some Egyptians.. are designating their live by the family calling, such as Ibrahim el Arbagi el Cairo-Arbagi being the samehe Wagner in German or Carter in English.
On the verge of self-rule, India's people are recognizing that they need distinctive continuous family names. Frequently the one a 'per- son adopts is that of a caste or tribe Bannerjes or Bose, for in- stanceTM among Hindus, Bud Quraishi or Khan among Muslems. Sometimes a writer gives his nom de plume to his family; thus have arisen the Wai and Nasir clans, among others day
