THE VOLGA-DON CANAL
Two Schemes Under

The Idea of connecting the Volga "and Don by a navigable canal. which has been under consideration periodically for
ዘር
aver
300 years, now seems cording to a statement issued by the Moscow Narodny Bank, Limited.. to be in a fair way-to- wards realisation. As a result of careful investigation of the ter- rain and contours, two schemes have been prepared, and it has now been decided to proceed with a plan which provides for the con- struction of a canal 100 km. long between the Don and the Volga, beat Stalingrad.
An
This waterway will include seven locks and will allow of the passage of vessels up to 5,000 tons burden. earth dam 3 km. long is to "be constructed, so that the level of the water of the Don will be "aised by 40 m.. thus enabling the flow to be directed not only. along the canal, but along the rives Karpovka "and Solyanka. It will also enable a reservoir, to be formed so that the height of the river can be regulated. through- out the year. The annual flow from the Don along the canal Into the Volga will be 12,000 ml- lion cub, m, and will be utilised to generate from 4,000 million kWh to 2000 million kWh per annum in four hydro-electric stations. The effect of constructing the canal-which. It is estimated," will take five years and necessitate the removal of 34,400,000 cub. m. of earth-will be to provide cheap transportation for fuel and metal from the Donetz Bast to the north, and of timber and grain from the north to Rostov-on-Don and the south via the Don-Azov Canal. It will also solve the probl m of irrigating 10 million, acres in the Trans-Volga regions. Tbls service will consume 18,000 million cub. m. of water-per annum and will be effected by electrically- driven pumps supplied from the stations already" mentioned. The estimated cost of construction is about 170 to 180 million roubles.
Another canal is to be built to link the Kama River, which is a tributary of the Volga, with
the Pechora, thus connecting the Arctic Ocean with the south and forming part of a unified system between the south and the Baltic via the River Sheksva, the Be- laya Lake, the River Kovzha, the "Onega Lake, the Svir River, and the Ladoga Lake. The new Volga Canal will also be connected with Moscow, thus placing the capital in communication with a large network of waterways
And Where'd You Get It? "How old are you, sonny?" asked' the Inquisitive old man of the little boy on the beach.
"Six," came the brisk reply. "Six," echoed the old man," "and yet you are not as tall as my un- brella."
G
The boy drew himself up to his full height.. "How old is your um- brella?" he asked.

The Fund was founded by a few enthusiastic lovers of art, and at the end of a year's endeavour it numbered about 500 members; to- day this total has increased to 10,000, which includes the men and women best known in the world of art.
Moreover, the Fund's annual subscriptions have risen from £700 to over £13,000, while the receipts during its existence, along with the amounts collected iri response to special appeals, have exceeded the surprising sum of £300,000, all voluntarily given.
This total has involved a great amount of persistence and tact on the part of the Executive mittee, and none of the officials Com-

London, Jan. 9.
Mok and Moina, the London Zoo's gorijas, are now being given tea twice a day for the good of their health. Tea is their favourite beverage, and they drink it straight from the tea-pot.
One afternoon a small quantity of cod-liver-oll cream was put in with the tea. As usual they seized their tea-pots greedily and drank, but if either of them noticed any- thing strange about the taste they evidently did not object to it, for the following day, neither of them hesitated to take their tea. As pre- vious attempts to give them their medicine on a plece of sugar failed they now have tea in the morning "as well as the afternoon, la order to take a full daily dose.
The experiment of allowing these apes to go out of doors in winter is proving a great success, and al- though they remain indoors if it is raining heavily, they enjoy paddling about in the pools left by a shower,
