Merchants requiring money to settle accounts may apply for the trade bonds from the Chamber of Commerce. which has a special committee in charge of these bonds. Applicants must be able to furnish shops, house or machinery as security, and the amount of bonds given will be one half of the value of the property under pledge.

It is possible now for business. people to secure the trade bonds" without giving twenty per cent in provincial notes The previous practice was that applicants for trade bonds must provide :20 per cent. in provincial banknoter, which were sealed up as a means

stabilize the then depreciated | UK LONDON:- paper currency. This requirement is not necessary under the third issue of commercial bonds,'

These bonds will be used to pay debts and to effect: all business transactions. The Provincial De- partment of Finance is asked to accept the bonds as payment for the various taxes, but no definite decision has been made.

VAST TRAFFIC IN

SILVER

£1000 Smuggled Into

India Daily

Silver. is being smuggled into Jedis across the Afghan frontier at the rate of about E1000 worth daily.

That fact has been established as the result of the seizure of a large quantity of contraband coins in Ahmedabad (Gujurat).

The vast contraband traffic is attributed to the recent rise in the prices of silver, but so great bas peen the influx that the Bombay rate for silver has been forced to over is below the London rate for every 100 tolas (about 37 ounces).

It is believed that most of the smuggling is done by Afghan nomads, who are notorious money- lender. On the approach of win- ter they drive their caravans of camels, which sometimes number as many as 4000, over the bound- ary.

Privately Melted

Once in India they break up into small parties and scatter all over the country. They lend wherever they happen to have their "beat," and their silver eventually finds its way to the bazzars.

From there it appears, it is sent to Bombay, where it is prí vately melted, efined to the re- quired quality, and, then sold to the mint or in the bullion market. The Indian and Afghan authorities "are now considering messures for strengthening the custome barriers between the two countries, and preventing the contraband trade.
