20 Tons Of Molten Glass To Make A Mirror!
Up at Corning, New York, what has been well described as the most valuable plece of glass in the world is gradually cooling in the hope that, a few years from now, man with ita ald may peer millions of light years further into the heavens than he has heretofore been able to see..
It probably is hardly proper to describe as a "piece of glass the new 200-inch mirror, weighing twenty tous, which for the next ten months must slowly anneat at gradually reducing "temperatures and thereafter be carsfully polish ed for inany months more.
Its intrinsic as well as potential scientific value is tremendous

Both the scientists were invited
to be present and the general, public, through Press representa tives, saw the actual casting and learned of the long preparations for it.

More than a month was required for preparing the "soup," as the workmen called their molten glass. Ten days alone were needed to raise the furnace to the required
heat.

The successful pouring was, as at the time, in large reported part due to the experience of casting another 200-inch reflector on March 25.
In that attempt the cores at the bottom of the mould, which are so geometrically spaced and shaped ne to strengthen the mirror and reduce its weight, were held in place by steel rods. Some of these broke and the cores, of less specific gravity than the molten glass, Bloated to the surface.

cores
For two mouths these floated on top of the mirror, which was allowed to cool much nore rapidly than would have been the case had the casting been entirely successful.
At the end of May, when the glass had cooled enough to be worked with, they were removed by
sand blasting, but around where they bad rested were small- ripples. Two months later these

Near the furnace, the mould had TUESDAY, JAN. 22, 1935 been constructed. With its cores in place. it appeared, as viewed through the openings into which the glass was poured, not unlike a village of igloos ATA
A skilled crew of five had been carefully drilled in the work of ladling the glass from the furnace, four hundred pounds at a time, pouring the choicest of it into the mould and returning the rest to the furnace. -
