CANOE SHAPED HATS FOR 1935

Tilted Attractively Over Right Ear

Ladies! You will be wearing long. canoe-shaped hats in 19351-

They will tit, attractively over your right ear and very, very smart they will look, too.

And if half your line of vision Is cut off by these 'jolly millinery confections, we can safely rely on you to combine Chic with safe- ty.

For I have been talking to one of the men who decrees what is to perch prettily on your head from season to season. Mr. Frank Brighten, of Marleric, in Conduit-street, W; has been de- signing hats now for nearly - a quarter of a century, and when he says a hat is going to be worn, it is worn.

Not many men know as much about hats as Mr. Brighten, and one of the less knowledgable has been roundly condemning those creations which tilt rakishly over one eye. No woman could possi- bly be trasic-conscious in them, according to him.

But Mr. Brighten anorted at such cerping criticism.

"Woman is the most adaptable creature in the world,” he told me. "I fashion decrees that a woman shall wear extremely high heels, she, sensibic person, will walk accordingly. If it is · fas- hionable to be tightly-laced, she will eat less.

"And if fashion requires a bat to filt over one eye, you can rely on a woman to remember that' fact

before she starts crossing the road. She's a good deal more sensible than the critic of this millinery mode!

"There has not been a single instance of any sort of accident as a result of wearing a hat slanting over one eye."

Millionery designers realise that women want to look their best. Which is why these canoe-shaped hats will be so popular. They are very practical and supremely smart

It's not new, this tendercy for dressing very small people. BS much like their grown-up be- longings as possible in fact, it's really very ole. But there was a period, fairly recently, during which no small girl ever wore & frock in the least like her mother's or grown-up slater's." whereas to-day she quite often does.

When it comes to party frocks there is choice enough to satisfy any mother who likes to dress her children according to their type:

Some small girs look quite adorable in frills Frills of net: mounted over satin in close set TOWS which reach from the shoulders to the not very far away hem; frills of taffetas, out- lining the taffetas bodice and ending the skirt in scallops, frills of One Valenciennes lace in fes- toons on a delicious froči of white organdi, or its silken sister." Taffeta Frocks And Hats

Fashion need not be monoton ons. In former days, once we had secured our autumn ward- robe, we were more or less con- tent to go on with it till spring.

Not so now! Each month, al- most each week, we hall some- thing novel in the dress world. It may be a colour, a fabric or merely new way of tying a collar or cuff. That is where, the accessories of fashion are 50 helpful. without being extrava gant, we can achieve pleasing variety

For the next few weeks, allow-.. Ing a lapse, for sale bargains, we can probably make do with our clothes, always providing we managed to secure the practical woollen ensemble in addition to the fur of winter.

The Indoor Coat There are many types of wool len frocks to select from, and the coat or cape that matches the dress should be possible to wear. In the house, as the very waim furs or fur-lined wraps can be left in the ball at winter tea and cocktail parties."..

It is not everyone who is equip- ped with such new and lovely furs that they wish them to be seen. That is why the woollen or even velvet dress is best when complete in itself. Also, most houses to-day are too hot for much. tur. The afternoon dress is all-important in winter-time. Often 't is worn from four till 12 D.m

Necklines and sleeves are full of charm. Straw-Like Taffeta

It is to be a red silk season. So far taffeta promises to be Arst favourite. In the new hats taxeta is 50 manipulated and hand-worked as to look like some very queer straw full of charm and surprises. Taffeta seems to call for frills, plakings, and Bruches. The kimona or: dolman type of sleeve is very good för the taffeta frock. A kimona top of black taffeta with an under- sleeve and cowl collar of soft white satin e a French favourite, and is worn with a

a new black and white plaited belt made of kid. All-antin is ever more char- ming for a model of this kind.

A amart morning outfit was a plain underdress of black wool with long mall bishop sleeves fastening at the wrist, and A rounded neck-edged white plque. This had a pinafore tunic in a gay black and white tartan taffe:s. Another useful idea was

Other small girls look odd' and' feel uncomfortable in frills, where- as if you put them into severely cup dresses of taffetas in a glow-

In all cases where skirts are still short it is as well to have. knickers made to match the frock. In colour, if not actually in material. Transparent affairs in net or lisse are always made with a slip of satin or crêpe, and in this case it is easy to make the knickers of the same stuff.

The remarks about fitting the party clothes to the personality of the wearer apply quite. much to small boys as to girls

Now and again you see a child who manages to look quite beautiful and to remain blissfully, unselfconscious in the picture kind of party zult " yes, eTEŃ with satin or velvet for its fabric and paste for its buttons" and Little Lord Fauntleroy frills for its adornment. But there are many more who cannot. Freck- les and a touch of truculence about the chin are marked cases: in point Such boys are ten times as happy and much more acceptable to the eye in Ane jer-1

to have tunic of plain blackey and shorts, or, if very young satin, which is excellent for smaller evening entertainments.

Every woman longs for colour at the turn of the year. No one questions the smartness of the eternal black, but a break-away into the enchanting realms of colour is a sign of spring-time.
