“BUNDLING”
An Old American
Custom!
Paramount's THE FURSUIT OF) » HAPPINESS, in which Francis Lederer, the young Czech actor has the greatest opportunity of his career, brings to the screen for the first time the old custom known as "bundling," the naivete and humour of which has taken America by storin.
to
The period of the film is the American War of Independence era. In those days the Puritan fathers did not like flirting, for in 1847 they got together and concocted a law, which declared, Whereas it is common practice in diverse places for young men irregularly and disorderly watch all advantages for their evil purposes, to insinuate into the affections of young maldens by coming to them in places and seasons unknown to their parents for such ends, whereby much evil has grown amongst us, to the dis- honour of God and damages of Partles... That was flirting!
The penalty for not asking the old man's permission was £5 for the the first offence, £10 for second and then a stia gaol sen- tence. Bundling, carefully super- vised by papa and mama was the natural result of such pro- hibition. The next time the young man called, he and his maid, were put to bed, thus 88- ing fuel when it is scarce. Each was tied in a bundling bag with drawstrings at the neck and knees and a centre-board kept the two apart
Francis Lederer, in THE PUR- SUIT OF HAPPINESS plays the part of a young Hessian soldier who falls in love with a Puritan maid. Joan Bennett is, his lead- ing lady, while important parts are taken by Charlie Ruggles, Mary Boland and Barbara Baron- dess.

Jack Buchanan is always an entertainment in himself, and That's a Good Girl" offers him the type of part in which he ex- cels that of a much-harassed young man who spends most of his time between the devil and the deep sea;
Playing opposite him in many sequences is Elsie Randolph, re- velling in the broad character of Joy Dean, the private detec- tive who disguises herself as "Wilhelmina," a German girl, in the interests of the chase which she is employed to pursue..
It was in this part, on the. stage, that Elsie Randolph first became leading lady to Jack Buchanan, after playing comedy parts in all his shows from the time of "Battling Butler."

Moya, a young ming with a half a million inheritance, is port- rayed by Dorothy Hyson, the famous daughter of a still more famous mother-Dorothy Dick- sor Miss Hyson, though only seventeen has already made a big hit in the British film world, and has pleyed a leading part in Boris Karloff's British film The Choul
Moya pairs off with Francis Moray, an opera singer. This part is taken by Garry Marsh, his fortleth flm role in three years.
In addition to Jack Buchanan and Esie Randolph there are three other artistes in the aim version of That's a Good Girl" who also played it on the stage.
These are Vera Pearce, in the part of a temperamental and jeal- ous opera singer, William Ken dail as one of the hero's im- pecunious friends, and Kate Cut ler as the old aunt who has charge of, the money bags
