THRILLS AND SPILLS
Yesterday's Racing At Fanling
(BY "MORNING DEW")
The racing yesterday at Kwant left little to be desired, for favourites shared honours with outsiders. The opening event provided a handsome dividend. when Racing Strain came home in front of a field of five. Another nice dividend was paid by The Bogle, when he ran into a place in the cross-country event.
The new betting system provided only two dividends during. the whole afternoon. which were more than even money. The cash sweep figures grew as the afternoon wore on and the prize" for the last race was quite handsome indeed.
The big cash sweep was drawn in the morning and the win- ning numbers will be found below. The first prize exceeds $30,000.
THE LOAFER WINS LADIES RACE
(Mr. Davis) Miss Scott Harston's Marina,
168 lbs...(Mr. Deitz) 3 Pari-mutuel:-
Riding The Loafer, Mrs. Paton | Mr. R. Allen's Punch, 168 lbs. scored her first win on the local course in the half mile sprint event for ladies. She handled her mount very well and was never in danger of being beaten, although Bay of Calamity ran very well towards the close of the race.
In the last race, Mr. Wall re- ceived, a nasty fall while one pony The Bogle) was badly injured in the last race..
Racing Serain
In the opening race, there were only five starters, and Racing Strain. who was sent in front early in the race, was kept there throughout by Mr. Field although he was pressed all the way by The Curlew and Widnes." There was nothing in the race until half way up the home straight when facing Strain drew ahead and won quite casily. Widnes was second and The Curlew third. Mouche found the pace too much for him towards the latter part of the race.
Another Outsider
Burgomaster. by winning, the second race, upset a warm favour- ite in Racing Pluck. The pony stumbled early in the race, but caught up with the field and over the very last hurdle he actually disputed the lead with Burgo master, but stumbling again had to be content with second place, The Curlew fust nosed out Cloudy Eve for third place. Wakefield af well backed candidate stumbled and threw his jockey after half a mile.
Soldier Of Italy
In the third race Soldier of Italy won leading from start to finish with Punch a poor second and Marina third. The leader ran strongly at the start and put sumcient distance between himself and Punch to avoid any challenge. from the latter. The remaining six ponies were quite a distance behind at the finish.
The Ladies Scurry The Loafer got into the lead al- ruost as soon as the race started and running strongly, kept in front throughout, with Bay of Calamity and Kung pressing him at the Anlatı Kung did not have too good a start or he might have done better.
The Cross Country Tom Cobley, as generally anti- cipated wan the Cross-country event without very much effort although he was hard pressed at the finish when he fumbled at the last hurdle. He fed all the way followed by Festival Eve and in "the run home the two were still in the lead with The Bogle close up. The last-named finished third, with one of his fore legs badly cut up,

Particulars Of Saturday's Tryouts
(BY MORNING DEW")
Quite a long list of poules were exercised yesterday morning, but the times are still very much on the slow side and nothing indicative of quality was meen. The Bean Goose (an Australian). put in a very fast finish, as did another un-named pony (No. 28).
Of the Griffins Trowbridge, Estry, Tammany Hall, Guiding Star, Mistake Bay and Garry moved impressively, but in the ab- sence of fast work, it is difficult to say just how good they are. Some of the subscription griffins are already, duing quite well and a close perusal of the times given below might repay study.

THE SOUTH WEST RAILWAY BRIDGE
Important Link
Caaton. Dec. 22.
It will be realized that when the South West steel Railway Bridge is constructed, it will be one of the most important bridges of the Canton-Hankow Railway.
This bridge will be the connect- ing link between the Canton- Hankow and Kwang Sam Railways, and will also serve to connect up the lines from the four points of the compass.
It is difficult to say how proft- able and advantageous this bridge will be to these various railway Lines.
It has been decided to build this bridge between Ngau Koo Shs and Shik Wat Tong, and it will be over 1,800 feet in length.
The bridge will be constructed by a foreign firm of contractors, and will cost about $5,000,000.
It is reported that work was com- menced in August last year under the supervision of the City Public Works Department, and it is ex- pected that the whole bridge will be completed for delivery in four years time-
