The Chinese Government is con sidering the construction of a.. $5,000,000 bridge across, the Chien- tang river, near Hanychow, where the need, long felt, has increased. with the completion of a network of highways, of which Hangchow is the centre. A Chinese bridge engineer, Mao Yi-shen, of Pelyang University, has submitted a de- sign, based on the plans of an American engineer. The new bridge, which will connect Chakou, on the north bank, with Ching- klang, on the south bank, will be two kilometres in length and 40, fti in width. The machinery will be of the turbo compound type, having two- cylinders working in conjunction with a low pressure turbine on the Bauer-Wach system, and capable of developing 1,050 1h.p. од trial at about r.p.m., two bollers 'single-ended, 10 ft. od x 11 ft. 6 ins, long x 210 lbs, per sq. inch working pressure, 200 degs Fahr, superheat, coal burn- ing, Howden's forced draught.
These engines are being supplied by the builders 'Neptune engine works, who have already supplied and fitted engines of this type in one small steamer with com- plete success.
For comparatively small powers they are claimed to be the most economical type of steam engines that have yet been brought into

Mr. Stéphèn 3. Pigott, who for the past 15 years has been Clydebank director of Messrs. John Brown and Co., Ltd., has now been appointed to a seat on on the board of the company.
As head of Brown's engineering department, Mr. Piggott has been largely responsible for the design' and construction of the propell- ing machinery for some of the most noted ships afloat; his latest work is, of course, the machinery for the new Cunard White Star Uner Queen Mary.
Mr. Pigott is well known as an authority on marine steam tor- bines, a subject which he has been. Interested in and actively associated with for over a quarter · of of a century. His early train- ing was obtained in the United

Further changes at Clydebank are expected in the dear future; It is learned that the retirement of the secretary, Mr. J. B. Hen- derson, will be announced at an early date.
Mr. Henderson has been a tower of strength to the local board, especially during the trying period represented by the past two or three years. He has been associated with the Cirde- bank shipyard, Le. Mezars. Brown and their predecessors, for a period of nearly 50 years.
