FORESIGHT OF ANCIENTS
140 Years Old Rice Used for Relief
Tsurugata, Japan. Eating rice that was stored 147 years ago, villagers of Tsurugata, Akita Prefecture, in the centre of the famine-stricken northeast, to day were singing praises to the foresight of those who ruled in those days.
The rice--250 bales in all-was kept in storage in a specially- constructed village granary which was filled after a bumper crop in 1877. Twenty-five-bales--were-re- moved recently for distribution among the most destitute in the community and it was found to be in perfect condition.
