EMPIRE PENNY POST

Early Restoration Urged

'At a mouling of the Comwell of the British Empire League held on Wednesday last, the 7th Instant, and presided over by the Earl of Stradbroke, the following resolution was unanimous. ly passed on the motion of Sir Henry`Barvell,” seconded by Sir Benjamin Morgan:

"That the Council of the "itish Empire Lengue again urges upon His Majesty's Government the importance of restoring at the earliest possible date Empire Penny Postage'as a`sål- mulus to Empire Trade."

Penny Postage would help very considerably in this direction.*

In moving the resolution; Bir Re-establishing Henry Harwell said that "Penny Postage had been in operation in this country for a period of nearly 100 years. The increase in the sealed package postal rate from a minimum of id. to lid. was a war time measure but like many other war time measures it continued long after the reason and the ne- cessity for it had ceased to exist.”-

Referring to Post Once revenue, Str Henry said "In the last 10 years no less a sum than £80.000,- 000, had been collected by the Past office as surplus revenue, or, to take the last five years, the figures were more impressive still with a surplus revenue of over £50,000,- 066, and for the last financial year alone the figure was over £11,000,- too. so that this great public utility service, the Post Office, was a big profit making concern. It made prodts through good years and bad and on an ever increasing scale,”

"No doubt the Postmaster Gen- eral was gratified, and probably the Government as a whole, but he (Bir Henry) could not help think- ing that it was a short-sighted policy to make such profits out of the Post Office, because, they had to remember that these profta were being made very largely at the expense of the trade and in- dustry of the country. Those en- gaged in trade and industry were putting forward every possible et fort to bring about and hasten trade recovery, and the Govern- ment should be doing everything In its power to assist this effort.

BAGUIO GOLD TO EXPAND

Immediate Addition Of Equipment

At a meeting of the board of directors of the Bagulo Gold Mining Company held December 3' It was decided to increase the plant capacity to 200 to 250 tons per day.

The directors have authorized the immediate, purchase of the necessary equipment for the mine and the added machinery for the mill in order to bring the produc. tion up to this figure. Plans have been prepared in advance for the installation of this equipment and the work will proceed as rapidly as possible.

1.

"During late September, and early October, prospecting work began to show such results that it pecame evident that added equip- 'ment was necessary for efficient work in the mine, and that deve- lopment work for 1935 would sop- ply a tonnage of ore which must be sent to the mill, because of its Average value," W. W. Harris, president of the Bagulo Gold Mining Company, declared yester- day.

"The general "superintendent in his report to the board of direc- tors states:"

**In conjunction with the mine superintendent I have made a survey of the ore reserves in the mine and I estimate positive prob- ably and prospective ore at 231,550 toms of avalúc of "$1,106,275.00 (based on gold at $20.67) or at the present market price of gold at $35.00 per ox, $2,376,604.00. or PeBoB 4,753,208.00.” “

In view of the recommendations of the general superintendent and the "estimated tonnage of ore as shown by the reports submitted. the board of directors have auth- orized the Increase in the milling capacity.

Sir Henry Barwell went say that he could not help thinking that from the Government's point of view the restoration of Penny Postage would be good business. No doubt it would be said that it would mean,a considerable loss of revenue, but whatever the immedi- ate result might be, he was sure that ultimately it would mean nót loss but gain. partly as the result of increase in poštal business itself and partly, and more important still from the increase in the volume of trade due directly and indirectly to the stimulus which cheaper postage would give. An enormous amount of postage mat- ter which was now transmitted by the id rate would undoubtedly go 1d rate because greater pulling power of the sealed packet, and many now using the lid, postage for advertising pur- poses would advertise more largely in this way if they had id rates. They had the experience of Canada to prove that cheaper postage rates. means a gain in revenue. "They had also the experience of the railways with their penny-per- mile passenger transport to prove the wisdom of the policy which they now advocated in connection with the Post Office Department. They recognised and appreciated the splendid work done by Bir Kingsley Wood Postmaster General but they could not help thinking that he might safely go further still.
