Bolton, Brentfords: West Ham Manchester United" Notts Forrest and Blackpool are all making a strong bid for promotion with the odds in favour of the first three. Bolton won at home, Brentford and West Ham shared points at Port Vale and South- ampton respectively.

Owing to the Second Round ties of the Cup, only two matches each of the two Sections of the Third League were decided. In the Southern Section Charlton is at the top, and in the Northern Section Tranmere (with two games in hand), and Halifax, are in the lead.

The Rangers beat Hearts to take the lead in the Scottish League from the latter with a game in hand.
