"Soldier of Britain, BRECHIN who failed so signally in the Derby, was not fancied by many for the long race, but events prov- ed that this grey is not a bad stayer at all. As a matter of fact all the ponies which account ed for Soldier of Britain in the Derby did not start in Saturday's | race, and as I said in big bold types on Saturday morning, Sold- ler of Britain was dangerous! KING'S WARDEN..
The failure of King's Warden provides an interesting study. This] pony moved remarkably well in all his early morning gallops and the manner in which he was tear. ing up the straight during the fortnight preceeding the race, led me (and many others, I fear), to think that he was in tip-top con- dition. Apparently he was not, for after the first six furlongs on Sa-' turday it became obvious that only a miracle could have provided ( King's Warden with a win! The pony tired very rapidly after the first mile but nevertheless was pushed for all it was worth. He was game enough, but not clars enough.

At one time Soldier of Britain was running so well that he was looked upon as a moral "cert" 10: the Derby, but he failed miseraby iri the big meeting. There is zo doubt that this pony cannot run 147.1, more than two seconds In the mud, but is quite different faster than Portia's time for the when the going is dry. If the next; mile. annual meeting is held unider ídeal į 'conditions we may hear a good deal of Soldier of Britain yet, in spite of the fact that he will be racing against Trentbridge, Liberty Bay and Diana Bay most of the time.

MR. PIH'S RIDING
Two very excellent races were ridden by Mr. H. C. Pih, who comes to join the rank of local riders with a very brilliant record in Shanghai. His win on Cavalcade was meritorious, but I think the really good bit of riding which he We shall have an opportunity at showed was when he brought the next meeting to see Liberty Young Chap to victory. The ear- Bay in action. The pony is ran-ller pace set by Delightful Chance ning in the St. Andrew's Stakes, and Chesterfield was very fast, over a milo and a half. The en- but Ph was confident on his tries close to-morrow, but I don't mount and once the field turned think the opposition is likely to into the straight he came through extend him. Incidentally, it is a like a knife. It is delightful to very sporting gesture on the part see how these, experienced rider of the owner to keep Liberty Bay can come through a field without away from so many extra meetings | being "Jämmed" at all.
