What Sailors Say
The days of the clipper ships Dra. passed. The picturesque square-rigged vessel 15 & ship rarely seen to-day, but on the high seas of literature galleons and caravels, barques and brigs, whalers and clippers, their safis full set and tinted by a never- setting sun, still plough the billows of make-belleve.

ar to pace the quarter-deck, the reader must posses a vocabulary of the sea that exacting writers are demanding.
Most people who like a good sea story (and few there are who do not) know that we must say: bow and not front, stern and not rear, cabin and not room, and shrouds and not rope ladders. They call the right side of a vessel ' star- board and the left side, port.
But how many know that the Roaring Fortles" are the wester-. ly gales that can be counted on to blow practically every day of the year between the parallels of forty degrees and sixty degrees south; or that the region of calms near the Equator is known as the **Doldrums," where stips were becalmed for weeks and the crews were nearly frantic from boredom: or that the "Trades" are fresh breezes, which blow, steadily from the north-east in the region of the Tropics?
"SHEET" IS A ROPE
Or do they know that a square- rigged, sailing vessel was called a "windjammer." A slave ship, 庭 "blackbirder," a whaler, a "Epou- ter," or that a "Bluenose. ship " was from Nova Scotia?
A word that is often misued is voyage." People say voyage, when in reality they mean passage." A "Passage" & Fongway affair from port to port, while a "voyage" is a mund trip made by a ship to a port or ports and return, or a trip around the world.
The deck of a vessel may be divided into three parts: in the bows (hence the term sailing before the mast) the "fo-c'sle," or forward deck, raised above the main deck, providing quarters for the crew; midships: and the 'poop or quarter deck, a raised deck aft in the stern) reserved for the oficers. Then од three-masted vessels from bows to stern we find in order: the foremast, the main- mast, and the mizzen-mast.
Strangely enough, a "sheet" is not a sail, but 'a rope attached to ia sal; and "stern sheets" is the Boor covering in the stern of a small boat.
EIGHT BELLS · One, of the sea customs most | confusing to -"landlubbers,” and one made use of almost univer- sally in sea stories, is the method of measuring time at sea, not by hours, but by bells. This custom dates back to the days of the sand-glass, when the apparatus had to be turned over after the sand had run from the upper glass, which, took a half-hour.
watch
A boy was stationed to the glass, torn it over, and then strike a bell, At the end of the first half-hour he struck the bell once, then twice at the end of an hour, and so on. At the terminal tion of a watch-which was four hours long-eight, were sounded and another shift of "hands" tumbled out on deck to take.. up the accessary duties.. Since the sea, day is twenty-four
men or
hours long. beginning at noon, it was divided into a series of six watches.
The men on the imaginary ships come in for particular titles, too; the captain was known as the "old man.”
The cook in the galley answered to the name of "Doctor," and the carpenter to; "Chip." "Sealawyer' was a name given to busybodies and disputers, while an "old shell · back" was an old sailor, "with every hair on his head a rope yarn and every finger a hook."
ON TOUR
The touring company had had a terrible week in the provincial town Just before Christmas, There was nothing available for wages, and the hero of the company, when on the stage, was forced to consider Ceaving his lodgings without the formality of payment
Carefully he collected and pack- ed, his belongings, and then let the zuitcase down into the garden from the window,
Then the cheerful voice of his landlady oated up to him:It's all right, sir. I've got hold of the bag. You can let go the rope now.
He will return via Canada, and the he hopes to enjoy a litle fishing.

Weak Teeth
are usually due to a lack of Calcium (lime) in the body
Kalzana is of the- greatest value in regulating the bodily functions. Any lack of calcium results in pain and prostration, but these are quickly relieved as soon as the shortage is made good. By taking Kalzana, the scientifically approved calcium treatment, you can avoid pain and discomfort. By restoring the balance of calcium in a natural way, Kalzana must do you good, and cannot possibly be harmful. · ·
