CHINESE WIRELESS

STATIONS

As the result of the need of greater communication facilities in, China, a large order for wire- less stations has been awarded to Standard Telephones and Cables, Ltd., by the Chinese Government. Under the scheme that is being put in hand the larger towns in China will have their own trans. mitting and receiving stations in order that they may be in con- stant communication by telep- hone or telegraph with other large and important centres. The wireless links will take the place

of costly toll lines for connecting the local telephone networks to- gether.. Although the scheme will be on a smaller scale than others, it will be almost indenti- cal with the world telephone ser- vices between England. America, Africa, Australia, etc.. with which Standard Telephones and Cables. Ltd., "have been associated. The apparatus will, however, incor- porate new features and careful precautions will be taken to en- sure absolute secrecy on the tele- phone side. Facilities will also be provided for high speed tele- graphy.

AUTOMATIC PHONE FOR

PEIPING

Acting on the instructions of the Ministry of Communications in Nanking the Peiping Telephone Administrations is making pre- parations for the installation of the automatic system in Pelping. According to tentative plans, automatic telephones will be in- stalled in the East City first. An -order for 3,000 of these telephones; costing about $170.000 is reported to have been already placed by the Ministry of Communications for the local admifiilstration.

Between 1925 and 1927 the ad- ministration had over 28,000 sub- scribers. This number decreased sharply after the removal of the capital to Napking in 1928. Dur- ing the last few years the business of the company has shown a steady Improvement. It is esti- mated that the administration has now about 18,000 paying sub- scribers.
