London, Oct. 28. Sir John Aird, the famous engineer, who helped to build the Assounn Dam in Egypt, died at his home In Eaton-square, S.W, at the age of 72 He had been ill for more than two years.

It was Sir John's grandfather, the father of, the first baronet, who founded the engineering firm bear- ing their name.

Frosperity For Egypt

It was while working under his father that Sir John helped in the making of the great dam.

The Assouan Dam was the most with spectacular achievement which he Wes associated. For years engineers said it could not be done, but his father, begün. He completed it, and brought wealth and prosperity to Lower Egypt.

The Hume Reservoli, work upon which was commenced late in 1919. has now been completed. It constitutes the "principal work carried out by the River Murray Commission, formed early in 1917. and consisting of four members who represent the Governments of the Commonwealth, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Aust- ralia, respectively. The reservoir, which is immediately below the junction of the Mitta and Murray Rivers, near Albury, New South Wales, is the main link in the scheme for conserving and utilis- Ing the waters of the Murray and its tributaries. It is stated in The Commonwealth Engineer that the present capacity of the reservoir is 1,250,000 acre-feet, but that provision has been made for an extension to 2,000,000 acre-feel, when this is warranted. The dam, which is the largest in 'Aus- tralia, is 5,300 ft. long and is com- and posed partly of concrete partly of earth with a „con-

The original pros gramme of the works provided for 26 locks and weirs between the mouth of the Murray and Echuca (a town in Victoria at the June-Str tion of Murray and Campaspe Rivers), storage facilities at Lake Victoria, and at Hume, and nine locks and weirs on the Murrüm- bidgee. Eleven of the locks and weirs on the Murray, have" now been completed and the river is navigable, at all seasons, over a distance of 600 miles to a point above Mildura, Victoria. Various circumstances have led to altera tions in the programme, and it is now proposed to construct two weirs and locks only on the Mur- rumbidgee, weir at Yarrawonga, and barrages near the mouth of the river to overcome silting. It is confidently expected that from the economic point of view the Governments responsible for the
