Fourteen nations contribute to the cost of maintaining the patrol, which watches for icabergs drifting towards the liners' courses and broadcasts warnings to Atlantic ships,
The largest contributor is Great Britain, the country with the " greatest fleet at stake. Last year Great Britalo, whose share of the expenses is 40 per cent., paid £4.830 of the expense. The United States
cent.. contributes 18 per Bnd the U.S.S.R. 1 per cent. Canada, Northern Ireland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway. Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Germany and Japan also helped to keep the fleet at work.
The patrol was originally inten- ed to warn ships of the presence of icebergs, but its work has since to include A 973- been extended tematic study of how, when and where icebergs and icefields may be expected. The danger is in the spring, when rising temperature cut the bergs loose from 'the icefields. Not until June 29 this year was the patrol able to report "All clear."
About 600 icebergs were. sighted this spring. The record spring was that of 1929, when 1,351 were seen.
