AUTUMN ON THE RIVIERA

Changes at Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo, Oct. 14. The autumn season on the Riv- lera is quiet but by no means duil, and several of the leading hotels report more visitors than at this date last year. important the most changes for many years past has been commenced during the past week, namely, the transformation of the Galeries Charles I. the covered promenade adjoining the Metropole Hotel, which was in pre- wor years the fashionable daily meeting place of visitors. Of late years it had los: its character through the erection of a series of small glass erections, offices, and bars. but on the initiative of the. directors of the Gordon Hotels these are being demolished. Ciro's Restaurant, closed during recent seasons, will also be reopened, and this part of the centre of Monte Carlo will be greatly improved be- tore the beginning of November. The preliminary programmes for the opera, theatrical and musical season indicate that the high traditions established in past years will be amply maintained.

NICE AND CANNES

The chief, topic on the Riviera, however, is the taking over of the Palais de la Mcditerranée, t Nice by the directors of Monte Carlo Casino. As the largest and, probably the most elegant build- ing of its kind on the Continent, this had begun to make for itself and for the city of Nice a great reputation. and the fire on the eve of its opening last season was a disaster. With the organisation of Monte Carle behind it entertain- ments on a scale never before at- tempted-in Nice are anticipated;

*Son of Kong" showing at the King's Theatre, is RKO-Radio Pic- tures' sequel to the epic predeces- scr, according to word from Holly- wood following a recent preview.

The theme of the story tends to romance with adventure, rather than toward unmitigated terrors, which, in. "King Kong" reached a high peak in the gigantic ape going to his doom because of a woman. "Son of Kong" offspring of this monster, proves to have startling Instincts of gratitude and chivalry.

"AUNT SALLY”

Coming To The Queen's

Besides the brillant performance of Cicely Courtneldge in "Aunt Saily" (Wednesday's attraction at the Queen's Theatre), and the many delightful" cabaret sequen- ces in the picture, there are also many musical numbers which will be whistled and sung everywhere by everybody.

Prominent among these are "You ought to see Sally on Sunday," "Riding on a Rainbow," "My, Wild Oat," "If I had Napoleon's Hist" and "I want a fair and square

man."

The story is concerned with the efforts of Cicely Courtneidge as. Sally Bird to break into cabaret. When she succeeds "she is kid- napped by gangsters and held for ransom, but she folls her abduc-, tors and gains her ambition.

Cicely is riotously funny, her Longs, adagio dancing, and her interludes with the gangster be- ing brimful of humour. She has the support of Sam Hardy, Hart- ley Power, Ben Weldon, Billy ! Milton and Phylla Clare. There's a treat in store.

One of the best "Aim-musicals” come to the local screen is paramount's adaptation of the current season's outstanding theatrical success "She Loves Me Not" starring Bing Crosby and Miriam Hopkins which opened to. crowded houses at the Queen's Theatre on Saturday. It treats' movie-goers to the strange spectacle of the dlm industry poking fun at itself.

Unlike other film musicals that we have had, this one has a story Woven round it and the plot of the firm begins when a little night-club dancer, witness to a Philadelphia murder, takes refuge in a Princeton dor- mitory. The father of one of the boys who is protecting her is a motion picture magnate, faced with dire ruin 1f his forthcoming college picture is as terribië -as he think it is,

The intervention of gangsters, police and the dean of the univer- rity transforms the affair into a hilarious comedy of misunder~ standing and lightning action, When the commotion and hub- bub subside, Grosby and the dean's daughter are in love, the dancer is in the movies and Princeton is again swelling in its sacred quiet.

Appearing with Crosby and Miss Hopkins, are Kitty Carlile, as the dean's daughter and Henry Ste- phenson as the dean, and in the supporting a cast are Hymer,Lynne Overman, Allen, George Barbier Barnett:
