did a fine thing for the photographer overseas. This sensitive film, because of its double coating - and anti-halo backing, is more suitable för bright colourings and vivid skies. It is specially made for tropical climates. Just as easy to use is ordinary film, but so much better.

was bad as i dividends were pass- ed but with the appointment of a new Chief manager. Sir Thomas Jackson," the position improved and since then the Corporation has been uniformly prosperous. Its history may be said to have been interwoven with that of the Colony and in a large measure with that of the Far East One of my pre- decessors, Sir Arthur Kennedy, said In the year 1872 "The most flourish- ing Corporation in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank- ing Corporation has acted liked a thermometer indicating the per- lodic condition of the atmosphere of Hong Kong" That is still true to-day.
I would add that the Govern- ment of this Colony is greatly in- debted to the Bank for much ad- vice and help.
TRIBUTE TO MR. GRAYBURN
The post of the Chief Manager of the Corporation is
almost unique. These is no doubt that he
"wields very great power-It has been suggested Indeed in certain quarters that perhaps his power is too great to be vested in one individual. Be that as it may there is no doubt that the position de- mands a man of broad views, courage and ability. The Bank has generally speaking been most for- tunate in the holders of the ap- pointment. It is perhaps invidi- ous to mention any particular names but I think I may be per- mitted to refer in particular to two very
notable holders-Sir Thomas Jackson whose statue looks benevolently down on this ceremony to-day and Sir Newton Stabb whose death a few years ago while he was still in harness constituted a serious loss to the Bank. In the present holder of the post, Mr. Giayburn, we have an able successor to past holders Since he assumed the duties of the appointment about four and a half years ago he has bad very dif- cult problems to contend with and he has shown great ability-and courage in dealing with them, and the Colony is indebted to him for his able handling of such problems especially that of currency.
CONGRATULATIONS
I congratulate the architects of this new building. We cannot yet see on the site itself its ultimate" form but I and no doubt many of you here have seen the model and will agree that it will prove a not- able addition to the architecture of this Colóny. This may possibly be deemed to be damning it with faint praise as architecture in Kong might almost be described 8.5 deplorable. It is pleasing therefore to think that we are going to have a build- ing as impressive as this promises to be.
Hong
I
I also congratulate the engineers on the efficient way in which they - are carrying out the contract. - I understand that they have had considerable difficulties to contend with but have been able to sur- mount them. Meanwhile they may be said to afford us a flavour of the old country for there are times when one might from the noise imagine oneself to be in one' of the busy industrial centres in the North of England. I realize however that this is unavoidable if the work is to be carried out expeditiously and that for a time at all events this locality must be excluded from any possible "zones of silence."
LADY PEEL LAYING THE CASKET CONTAINING LOCAL
In-conclusion on behalf of all present. I take the opportunity of this ceremony to-day to wish the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation continued prosperity.

Grayburn. - "Chief Manager of the Bank, in a brief speech expressed thanks to His Excelleney and Lady Peel, and the ceremony Was brought to . close by the presentation of a bouquet of flowers to Lady Peel by little Miss Joan Davidson, after which the guests adjourned to the interior of the partially-completed building where a reception WAS held.
