"River Flotilla, China, a small force of which little is heard, but which performs valuable service in the protection of British interests and trade in South China. It consists of the gunboats, Tarantula, Cicala, Moth, and Beathew, the first- named., acting as Senior Omcer's ship.

last service afloat was as executive officer of the battleship Royal Oak in 1831-32. Captain Halthide en- tered the Service in 1905, went to sea as midshipman of the Albion in 1907, and when the War began was a watch-keeping lieutenant
in the Battleship Thunderer in her for over six years, from Octo ber, 1912. until after the Armistice, and in February, 1910, he was given command of a China gun-. boat, the Woodcock, so that he is already familiar with the duties he is now to undertake. Among the ships in which he has since served are the aircraft carriera Pegasus and Eagle, and the cruiser Dragon.

SPECIAL RETIREMENTS The special scheme for the retirement with pension of surplus lieutenant-commanders and senior lieutenants is now closed.
