NEW YORK STOCK AND COMMODITY QUOTATIONS

AMERICAN ORIENTAL FINANCE - CORPORATION ·

AND S. E.

New York, Sept. 24. The American Oriental Finance Corporation's report through their New York agents, Messrs. E. A. Pierce & Co., states:-

Stocks: - Essentially, market conditions remain unchanged. We think that a moderately bullish attitude la justified.

LEVY & CO.

Wheat: There was some scat- tered quidation caused by the weakness of the Liverpool mar- ket, together with the weakness of both the Cotton and the Stocks' market. The firmness of Winnipeg wheat was due to snow in the wheat belts. There is lit- tle chage in the cash situation.

Cotton:-Textile mills are re- opening slowly. There was some Iquidation of the October post Mon. The Ginnings' report is 9.3 slightly bearish. construed The Dry Goods' markets are quiet, but there is some active Trade demand.

Rubber:-After a firm opening, a break in the Spot market caus- ed dealers to sell. Trading Was moderate. Sentiment was mixed but there was good support on the down-side at around the 16 Cents' level for March:

Flash: The Analyist Index of Business Activity is 80.2. The Arst Notice date for October Cot- ton is to-MOITOW.

New York, Sept: 24 Messrs. S. E. Levy & Company report, through their New York agents, Messrs. White, Weld & Co. states:-

Stocks:-Traders are operating with caution. We still thing that the market is in a good position to reflect any favourable news. Business done: 510,000 shares.

Bonds:- High-grade and US Government Issues were dull. Buying WAS lighter and the

volume

of trading was amall. Second-grades were slightly bet-

ter.

Wheat-Trading was dull. The larger visible supply of wheat prompted by further liquidations

Dispute With The Railway Police

Shanghai, Sept. 22. A dispute between, newspaper vendors and the railway police' at Nanking is preventing the delivery or English-language and Chinese newspapers, including the "North- China Daily News," to readers in the capital.

The dispute has arisen over the age-old custom of the newspaper vendors to sort Shanghai news- papers on the rallway platform. At 245 pm, on Sunday when the Shanghat (Chinese) newspapers arrived at the Nanking Central Station by express the vendors waited on the platform as usual to rake delivery of the newspapers for distribution to subscribers.

railway platform area because, they bushels.

It constituted public said. nuisance. The police ordered the men to do this work outside the railway platform, according to a Nanking newspaper.

Cotton: The US Government Bureau reports that cotton gin- ned up to September 15 totalled 3.130,797 bales This is conalder- ed bearish. The heavy cotton freer offerings by ginnings and farmers suggest the possibility of a further decline before any material advance occurs. Wes ther conditions are favourable.

Rubber:-The action of the sur- rounding markets is checking ag- gressive buying Total sales: 175 lots.

&

A protest was raised against this order, the vendors contending that for many years they had sorted their papers on the platform with- out any interference. Delegates were sent to the railway police authorities to discuss the matter but up to 5 pm. that day no settle- ment had been reached.

This incident was responsible for the

non-delivery of Shanghai newspapers that day but the ven- dors have gone a step farther and all newspapers from Shanghal, both English-language and Chinese, are being held up at the Post Office because the vendors are preventing Nanking branches or agents of Shanghai newspapers from taking delivery at the railway station, pending a settlement of the dispute.

The fire started at about 2; a'clock from the rupture of an oil "leed" pipe and damaged the casing of a boiler. The loss was trivial and repairs had been made last night permitting the ship to sail for Japanese and American ports at midnight, as announced. The alarm having been sound- ed, the Customs are-float Poo Chi, manned by crew from Central Fire Station, was des- patched to the scene. ' "At the same time engines were sent to the wharf from the Yangtzepoo Division as well as a detail of police from Wayside Station. The fight against the flames was led Gordon Dyson by Captain J Chief Officer of the Fire Brigade, 8% Electric Bond & Share assisted by Mr. W. C. Charters, Fourth Officer, and other fre officials. While the Foo Chi lowered, hose into the engine-room from the starboard side, a pump engine on the wharf similarly fought the fire from the part side, The firemen in the engine-room were assisted in their work" by members of the ship's crew, who had attempted to extinguish the flames before the arrival of the brigade.

The crew from Central Station spent an hour and 45 minutes on thescene, while the Yangtszepoo firemen were able to return to their station after an hour and five minutes. Mr. T.
