London, Aug. 9. Nine months ago it was decided what colours women would wear this autumn. It is now 'possible to see all the new shades illus- trated in beautiful fabrics of British manufacture, writes a cor- respondent.

"Women indirectly get what they want." I was told by a mem- ber of the British Colour Council. Matters of topical interest, affect fashion acutely, and so it was that the Persian Exhibition awoke appreciation of rich, deep colours; the industrial slump occasioned 담

of strong patriotic feeling in 1932, with a marked emphasis on the red, white and blue theme.

wave

This factor has not dominated the 1934. Autumn shades. They are rather the result of the Bri- tish, woman's inherent good teste expressing itself in the evolution of colour, gives a very unusual and pleasing relief especially for the older woman.

"Moorhen" and "Old Thatch” are the newest versions of greys verging on to belge. They look well in soft tweeds and angoras. Many phases of life and in- terest have been scanned to give each new colour the appropriate name, which just "catches the.. subtle difference it expresses. In the wine shades we have vintage" and "Oporto": in-the blues, "Alrway," "Trooper," and "Cadet." "Waverley," a greenish saxe blur, is distinct change.

"

The green group speaks of rip- pling water in "Cascade" and "Capri," with "Sylvan," "Moor- heri," and "March Browh” to- conjure up visions of the English countryside.

New Hairdressing Styles

Would you like a coiffure which looks like twisted ribbons of jet black liquorice?'.

Alternatively, would you prefèr" Battened rings of hair varnished so that they look hard and shin- ing and plaited with gold or sil- ver?

These are among the varieties of coiffure which a Parisian hair- dresser is preparing for use on the stage.

It may be that women will find them somewhat, too fanciful and their final resting place will be in a "Musee de "la"colture."

THE DEMAND

But women who do not indulge

in fanciful styles of hairdressing demand changes in style.

Here s news for them.

DRESS SECRETS

Notes For The Autumn

Fashion secrets often leak out before the dress shows.

Some London dress designers are ahead of Paris.

Dress designers can launch new fashions, but the success Or fallure of these depends on the would-be purchasers.

Those models which fall to appeal soon die a natural death, if, indeed they are not at once withdrawn.

Here is some cress news about new clothes.

It indicates the direction in which dressmakers' thoughts are

autumn running for the

and winter season.

Scarf Collars

Scarves are being used as part of a dress. They are cut in one with the back of the frock or blouse. They rise above the coat and are knotted in front.

On. woollen sults these scarf collars are made of silk in a con- trasting colour to the, dress.

Velvet and for are used in the

and are through slots in front.

The doom of the flared skirt has been pronounced by at least one dress designer, who is show- ing rather tight, straight skirts. reaching to just above the ankle for day dresses.

Such skirts are seen both in frocks and in tailored suits.

Coats to wear with these "are" rather wide skirted and belted in the Cossack manner with fur- trimmed sleeves and fur yokes.

For the, evening this designer favours closefitting dresses, giving a svelte line,

Beautiful Dresses

The last week had been a perfect beast and I could not get out at all but yesterday, as if to celebrate seeing the sun after such a long interval, I gave myself a treat and strolled over to Lane Crawford's Ladles Salon where my trouble, was amply rewarded. I saw the most beautiful array of silk dresses with swagger costs made of the new honey-comb material-you know the stuff I mean, of course.

N There were colours and styles to suit every figure but I liked the big white coat with red buttons best of all though the others were Just as charming.

One Day Special

Mazice's again are going to have something out of the ordinary --- a "One Day. Special" when her entire stock of goods will be brought down in prices to the lowest Ögures and everybody, will have an opportunity of getting something really select and cheap. And Maizee is so considerate too. fixing the sale for August 31 when all of us get our pay cheques. One thing though, when Malzgė says one day, she means one day

and it is no good, going back the day after and try to persuade her to have another sale.

Coloured Felts

When I went in to Mayo's, I saw the entire staff busy at work. Why all the excitement? I soon found the reason and it was a very good one too for they were unpacking the latest consignment of light-weight coloured felts and some already made up. There were coloured belts for the young. hats for the old, for the slim and "In fact for every age.

The House Of Smartness

Oh where, tell me where is the home of smart dresses? There is only one answer to this and that i Is Eve's. She has just received the very latest in autumn fashions and as the racing season is about to open again, what about giving him a surprise and make him take you out on a shopping expedition" Make Eve's your destination and if you arrive quick enough, you might be able to secure, one very tascinating dress I saw a navy

blue creation with white poker dots.

EDWARDIAN FASHIONS

Bring Back Some Senti-

mental Revivals

With a return to Edward an fashions in dress it would seem that we were reverting a little to Edwardian sentimentality.

For one thing, the "Confession Book" is creeping back into fav our. The questions one is called upon to answer to the best of one's ability are not quite so pointless, perhaps, as the "What is your favourite bird-flower- song" and so on.

Instead--"your principal virtue, real or fancied-your worst fall- ing, real or fancied-the physical change you would» best like to make in yourself your worst ex- perlence your happiest anticipa- tion" are all really rather in- "telligent and significant ques- tions which, in answering, do re- veal a certain amount of the wil- ter's personality. Another revival la, the mode of the "friendship necklet." One begs one's friends to turn out their trinket boxes and, to give one from them some little trifle of besd, or ornamen-. tal button, or tiny carving, or in fact anything that will, thread on to a string with others to form an original and sometimes rather barbarically ` effective or- nament.

The trinketa may be linked up by slender silver-chains,

Finally, there is another little Edwardian fancy coming in again —the autograph tablecloth, A

In these days it is usually 2 tea tablecloth, of fairly coarse crash, or Unen, in white natural shade, or colour,

Friends are asked to sign their names on it in pencil, perhaps to add some short sentiment, and then the pencilling is care- fully embroidered over in chain Persian, cross, or gatinstitch, in- weshable thread of silk.

The effect is best when the writings are scattered haphazard. over the cloth, and a gay result, 4 when each is embroidered to & *diserena" shade.
