Portugal has achieved the remark- able feat in the present dificult time of succeeding in balancing the Public Budget for six consecu- tive years. Another interesting feature is that the people are now experiencing the benefits of Dr. Salazar's administration by the important reduction of 50 per cent. on the National Emergericy Tax and a further 10 per cent, on the Land Tax. This is the Second time the Land Tax has been re- General-duced m each case by 10 per cent.

This new warship has embodied all the improvements recently in- troduced in modern naval con- struction for boats of this type.
IMPROVEMENTS IN THE ARMY
After giving the Portuguese Navy 15 modern ships the Portuguese Government is now occupying its attention with the modernizatın of the army and improvement of Its equipment and material.
It is not the Government's in- tention to build up a very big army and spend public money with the the idea of just having a numer- ous army. The Government in- tends to prepare an army efficient- ly trained and equipped, but which will be kept within the boundary of the nation's financial re- sources and strategical needs;
Military service will remain com- pulsory and registration at the agez of 16 and 19 shall also re- main. However, the standing re- gular army in peace time will not numerous; and as all undergone military instruction are called in case of war it happens that it is not necessary to keep a very big regular army in normal times.
