Cheering Crowd's Farewell

(Special Air Mail Service)

London. July 25. Mr. T. O. M. Sopwith's Cup challenger Endeavour ŝalled from Fortsmouth Harbour at 11.30 a.m.. yesterday. Shamrock IV, made her departure from here in 1914 and Shamrock V. in 1930 upon the same mission, to try to recover the America's Cup, which the famous Yankee schooner won from us in 1851, and which, after many at- tempts, has never been regained,

Sir Thomas Lipton tried Ave times to recover the cup, but great- ly as the strenuous efforts of his Shamrocks were advertised. the salling of none of his vessels at tracted the attention nor received the universal good wishes of the English public so sincerely as the Endeavour.

3

The outstanding fact that Mr. Sopwith Is himself practical yachtsman, takes the wheel, and commands his own boat, rightly caused the challenger Endeavour to be the most popular yacht which has ever left this country to try for the Cup. Her owner and his wife truly deserved the cheers which wished their racing, cutter "good luck as she sailed out of Portsmouth Harbour this morning.

Impressive Scene

It was an impressive and mov- ing scene. The sun had broken through а sky fleecec with cloud and a light northerly breeze rippled the surface of the harbour.

Endeavour hauled out from Cam- per and Nicholson's yard, where the final touches to her ocean equipment had

been given, and made fast to a buoy just opposite the King's yacht, Victoria and Al- hert. The Royal yacht and others in harbour hoisted flag signals wishing Endeavour "Bon voyage.".

Her ocean-going salls--just as their plan was shown in "The Daily Telegraph" this morning- were now set for the first time, and very workmanlike she looked! Maintrysall, mizzen, föresall and jib were set.

Capt.,, Williams spun his wheel round, and away she went before the light breeze out of harbour Thousands of sightseers lined the shores at Gosport, Portsmouth, and along the old Dockyard quays, giv. ing cheer upon cheer, and the naval sailors mustered on the fore- deck of the Victoria and Albert. There were cheers, whistles and syrens from yachts, great and small craft of every kind, and eyen a locomotive engine ashore con tributed to the din.

Six Amateurs

Endeavour now was manned by a crew of fourteen all told. This included six of her amateur crew who will be the first relay, and sail as far as the Azores, when they will be replaced by others from the Vita. The amateurs now on board are Messrs. Bacon. Mit- chell, Moitzer, Droop, Warrington- Smyth and Dr. Wally Richards.

More bunting

was flying at Cowes, ashore and afloat. "We wish you a pleasant voyage "the flags of the code spoke the signals -"Success," "Good luck."

Saarbruecken, Aug. 8. The complaint lodged by the "German" Front organisation" of the Saar region, against the seizure of documents during a police raid on the organisation's headquarters on July 25, has been granted by the examining magistrate who issued an injunction condemning the seizure as illegal and ordering the immediate restitution of the documents.

The police perquisition of July 25 was undertaken at the instruc- tion of the Governing Commitsstan on suspicion that the German front instigated the attempt on the life of the police commissary ot Saarbruecken, the German emigrant Machta.

The latest news received by the Naval Authorities on the situation in Foochow is to the effect that it is very quiet."

Meanwhile, the Yusih Cotton Mill-owners Association has des- patched a petition to the Executive Xuan registering strong opposition to the alleged intention of the Government to take over Mr Yung's mills.

Instead of adopting measures for their rehabilitation, the mes- sage deplores that the Government is trying to "readjust" and take. over the mills at a low figure. If the mills, which represent 30 years' labour of Mr. Yung, are thus to be acquired by the Government at a price set by itself, who will prises in this country in the fu dare to engage in Industrial enter-
